About Goa

India's smallest state Goa is located on the western coast of the country, adjoining the Arabian Sea, which provides the beach holidays that Goa is internationally famous for. The states of Maharashtra in the north and Karnataka in the south and east surround Goa. Together with the coastal stretches of these states, Goa is part of a larger cultural region known as Konkan. Northern Goa is more populated and urban, while the south is more forested. Beaches apart, rice fields and coconut plantations dominate the landscape. However, tourism is Goa's main industry.

For 450 years Goa was a Portuguese colony until taken over by India in 1961. This heritage is still apparent in the architecture of its churches and old houses, and the culture of its towns, which is very distinct from the rest of India. In the Catholic world Goa is important as the place where St Francis Xavier is buried (in the Basilica de Bom Jesus at Old Goa). Apart from Christmas and New Year celebrations, the 3-day long Goa Carnival (February, Panaji) and the Feast of St Francis (3 Dec, Old Goa) are famous attractions.

From north to south, the Goa coastline is marked by a number of beach towns, with relaxed ambience, seafood and water sports such as wind surfing, water skiing, sailing, water-scooters, and dolphin spotting cruises. The beaches of Calangute and Baga are the most visited while other famous beaches include Arambol, Anjuna, Candolim, Colva and Palolem.

Panaji is the state capital, a city of peaceful walks in the old Portuguese quarters, and cruises on Goa's main river, Mandovi. Nearby is the earlier capital city of Old Goa with its celebrated cathedrals, abandoned in the 19th century due to a persistent epidemic. Margao town is another centre of Portuguese cultural heritage. Ponda stands out for its Hindu temples built between 15th and 18th centuries. The international airport, Dabolim, is 29 km from Panaji. Humid for much of the year, Goa's peak season is November-February, especially Christmas-New Year time, for when advance bookings are essential.

"South Goa, a little boring" new review

  • 4.0/7
  • Posted 1 week ago
We attended a marriage function in Goa, and to be honest, I was a little disappointed with the locale.
Don't get me wrong, the beaches were clean and the roads great. But there was nothing else to do there .. AT ALL !!.
For the travellers seeking water sports and casions as well as great pubs/parties .. Avoid south Goa as the nearest hangout is Panjim, which is about 75 mins away.

Amazing beaches, amazing food, Friendly people - I had a blast. Spent a lot of time at the beach relaxing and also did some sightseeing in Panaji and old furniture shopping in Baga. I booked a car to take me around the old section of Panaji, amazing Portuguese buildings and really nice cafes. I also spent time in the Arpora area checking out old furniture and eating at the amazing cafes.

"Rainy Goa is kind of heaven" new review

  • 5.0/7
  • Posted 3 weeks ago
Still having a thought why I came back from Goa, I always had this wish that when raining(not an heavy one) I want to walk in the beach/seashore, my wish came true. I was really happy and enjoyed each and every moment. Who enjoys rain and loves beach for them it's kind of heaven. We bought few clothes which apt for Goa, we celebrated our close friend's birthday in a special party. We went to temples and churches.

"Goa is a Feeling" new review

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted 3 weeks ago
I went Goa with my best buddy Yogesh and instantly fallen in love with the feeling that this place gives me- something intangible, you can't really see it or touch it or explain it, all you can do is feel it and fall in love with the vibe, the energy and everything about it, I can't quite explain how much I love this place, every day that passed in Goa I find myself almost overcome with joy, I feel so lucky to be there and the warm weather and the tropical beaches, fresh seafood, rich curries and colourful markets the infectious energy and life of India, spices and sea breezes, and not forgetting vibrant orange sunsets over the Arabian sea that never fail to mesmerize me, That bike ride, churches, the water sports, night life of Goa, I don't forget the parties I ever do in Goa. And Goa is so colorful city in the world, I don't need to go in heaven because Goa is Heaven for me Simple In the end I still can't really explain why I love this place, it's just a feeling.

Every group of friends in india has made a plan to go to Goa at least once in their lives, some make it some don't, well we did. The best ever place to go to with your friends. And holidayiq is the best to help you out with the entire trip :) travelling to staying everything was awesome. Goa is known for drinks for lesser price and yes its true. The only thing you need to worry about is expensive food rates but it doesn't matter cause the place is just mind blowing.

"Masti tym @ Goa !!!" new review

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted 3 weeks ago
Goa .. It's a place to get rejuvenated ... That's the probable word for this happening state .. It does not matter whether you are travelling as a bunch of young bachelors or you have decided for a honeymoon trip ... The only thing that counts here in Goa is "Enjoy to your fullest".
For people reaching there by air .. The Dabolim airport is in southern Goa you need to hire a taxi to reach the northern part of Goa ... The original essence of Goa .. And those reaching by train get down at Thivim station to reach north Goa or madgaon station to reach south Goa. From Thivim there are prepaid taxis to take you to Calingute ... Where life begins in Goa
Once in Calingute just get to see the most happening beach of Goa- The calingute beach .. Wow .. Be it water sports or a sun Bath or a little jingle in sea water ... You are going to enjoy every bit of it .. Also walk a kilometre to enjoy the beauty of Baga beach ... And at night ... It's simply mesmerising to take seat by the shack and enjoy your fish meal with a pint of beer and " get to watch the Arabian sea in lit in moonlight". Off course another thing to enjoy by the beach is to watch the beautiful setting sun
For a north Goa tour you can go to the following places- Kuku's beach, Fort auguada, Sinquerium beach and fort( probably the best beach of Goa), Chapora fort, Vagator beach And anjuna beach .. The Saturday night flea market is anjuna special .. Here you may find yourself lost in a foreign crowd ..
For a south Goa trip the following places- may be seen- Dona Paula and miramar beach, the filmy chakkar( a boat ride to different Bollywood shooting spots), the kurugeshwar temple, the Shanta durga temple, The famous BASILICA OF BOMB JESUS, the archaeological survey of India museum, Lady of St. Cajetan Church, The viceroy's arch, our lady of immaculate inception church, big foot, the Colva beach and others
Both north Goa and south Goa Tours are conduce by Goa tourism in bis or car as per your wish ..
The most enchanting thing is the river cruise .. There are sunset cruise and dinner cruise on the mandovi river .. The dinner cruise comes with a collection of dances by locals along the ride in the cruise followed by dinner .. It can also be booked from Goa tourism.
Overall the essence of Goa is in north Goa and the for the knowledge of Goanese life style visit south Goa ...
Also don't forget a shopping hop at the Panaji city and enjoy some Goanese cuisine here in a famous restaurant here in The Ritz Classic ..
Hope you all enjoy Goa

"Beautiful beach city in india" new review

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted 4 weeks ago
Goa is a state in western India with coastlines stretching along the Arabian Sea. Its long history as a Portuguese colony prior to 1961 is evident in its preserved 17th-century churches and the area's tropical spice plantations. Goa is also known for its beaches, ranging from popular stretches at Baga and Palolem to those in laid-back fishing villages such as Agonda. Goa is also known as beautiful beach city in india. Goa looks like foreign country in India. Till today the Portugal cultural is available in Goa. Mostly couple and college student came Goa from india. So many foreigners came here for the beach beauty.
