About Orissa

Orissa

Orissa is located on the east coast of India, adjoining the Bay of Bengal, and is surrounded by the states of Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and West Bengal. The coastal strip is fertile, with alluvial rice-producing soil, fed by the rivers Mahanadi, Brahmani, and Baitarini. The interior regions are hilly, forested and inhabited by tribal people, who constitute almost one-fourth of Orissa's population. The state gets a lot of rain through the year and the coastal areas are subject to occasional cyclones. Orissa is a mineral-rich state, associated with mining, steel and aluminium industries, and power generation. It contains one-third of the country's bauxite deposits, one-fourth of its iron ore, and one-fifth of its coal.

Orissa's tourist attractions are clustered around the coast, especially in the triangle of Bhubaneshwar, Konark and Puri, which have old and architecturally celebrated temples. The capital Bhubaneshwar is not a big city but is said to be home to some thousand temples. It has a domestic airport and is the base to visit the renowned Sun Temple at Konark, a World Heritage Site, 65 km away. This 13thcentury temple to Surya was built in the form of a giant chariot with 12 pairs of wheels to carry the god across the sky. Every December the Konark Dance Festival of classical Indian dances is held here. The seaside town of Puri, 60 km from Bhubaneshwar, is a popular beach destination for tourists from the eastern region. But it attracts even more pilgrims for the Jagannath temple, a huge 12th-century temple that has 6000 priests and 400 cooks to perform the deities rituals. Lord Jagannath's annual chariot procession in June/July is pulled by thousands of worshippers. Chilika Lake, 50 km from Puri, is India's largest lake and a bird sanctuary.

To the north-east, Orissa has the Simlipal Tiger Reserve and the Bhitarkanika Sanctuary. The latter is known among wildlife lovers as the spot where lakhs of Olive Ridley Turtles come to nest every year in February.

"A quick trip to Orissa"

  • 7.0/7

This holi we planned a quick trip to Orissa. We covered Bhubaneswar konark and Puri by car. The temperature was moderate.

We loved the road trip which was through the urban areas. The full city has ample of temples. We stopped by most of them. All of them had a unique flavour. We had to dash to Konark so that we don't need daylight :-)

Konark was just awesome. The history of the temple and the gorgeous past of India was clearly depicted on the carvings.

On the way to Puri we stopped by Rama chandi. The sea beach was cool and we loved it.

Puri was crowded. We visited the temple. The security was impressive. The ambience inside the temple was an absolute bliss. The queue was long so we had to drop the idea to see the idols.

The overall trip experience was enchanting. We returned with candid Memories.

Loved the 2 day trip to Orissa. We would visit the place again and that time it would a longer trip.

The food of Orissa is tongue tickling.

The bamboo burnt mutton, the food of Dalma restaurant, the lingaraj Lassi, cheesecake phewwww!! Lot more!!

"Great experience"

It was a great experience in Orissa especially when travelling with friends and school group. What an amazing place it is. Everything it has from beaches to sand, temples to gardens and many more. Zoo was fabulous as no plastic item was allowed to take. It also has an aquarium where I saw the much awaited piranha. We met Achuyta Samante who works for the upliftment of tribal children in Orissa. Enjoyment on beaches and coconut water can't be forgotten. Konark was really a scenic beauty and yes the famous Jagannath temple and it's beauty was just eye catching. So overall I had a great experience for 6 days in Orissa.

I had visited to Puri and Bhubaneswar with my friends of my college for having some fun. Chilka lake is the most attractive place. Puri is famous for the Jagannath temple and Konark Mandir and sea beach. In chilka lake I had seen some dolphins that was unforgettable forever.

Jagannath dham is one of the most popular religious places in the India. It's beauty and the beaches gives it a great look. One can also visit the most popular Konark temple and the Dhalua Giri. It is about 60 km from the capital city of Odisha. By bus or by train one can easily travel.

While cycling India Tour for Guinness world Record, I reached this small town which is near by Bhubaneshwar. This place is really awesome and close to nature. This place is only for Nature lovers.. The whole town made by eco-friendly material and it looks beautiful.

Must see places in Orissa ra coal mines situated in many places of Orissa. Since I was a mining engineer planned a trip for orissa. Orissa is an undeveloed area but cities like bhubhaneswar, cuttack, rourkela, sambalpur are developed and good for shopping and staying. Puri is one of the best place I liked in Orissa.

"Good experience except the weather"

  • 5.0/7
  • Posted May 5, 2015
Weather is not that much manageable in Orissa in summer. Its too hot, you will feel that your skin is burning. I went to Orissa to visit famous temples thopta pani and tola tarini. Both temples are powerful and fulfil your wishes if you pray whole heartedly. These 2 temples are must visited by every one who is going to Orissa.

Food is not at all good. We went to a hotel in brahmapur, in orissa we cannot find south Indian thalis. We need to order separately for everything, like boiled rice, dal and curd they will bill it separately. Curd taste was so sour that we could not eat. So if any one is visiting Orissa, please don't order curd based foods.
