Overview of the destination I visited Andaman for 6 days with my wife in Nov 2009. So far I have only seen the sea beach at Chennai before this but I had read a lot about the beautiful beaches of Andaman. I must admit that all that has been written on the internet about the beaches in Andaman are quite true, especially the Radhanagar beach at Havelock. Andaman may not have a lot of watersport activities or a 'fun' place to visit (like Goa as I have heard from people who have visited there), but it sure is a place for somebody who would like to relax at a lesser travelled, peaceful and a really beautiful place.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping Although I missed quite a few major places that various people have mentioned on this website (and others) due to my schedule, there are surely some places to visit.
Havelock - Must visit
Cellular Jail (light and sound show at 5:00 PM Hindi and 6:00 PM English are good).
Aquarium is OK
Marina Park is nice and nicely maintained.
Phoenix Bay Jetty
Wandoor Beach
Kolanpur Beach - Not very popular but it was kindof OK to visit.
Also, some of the other places which others on this site have recommended but I couldn't visit myself:
Mahatma Gandhi Marine Park
Baratang
Ross Island, Viper Island etc. - 3 Island Tour
Activities & things to do There are not really a lot of 'activities' as such to be done, but for somebody who loves water can surely (and knows) swimming can definitely go for the Scooba Diving.
Snorkelling - for non-swimmers as well
Fishing Trip - Again, I couldn't try this.
A ride on the glass bottom boat and may be a ride on the speed boat.
For more adventurous kinds - a 10 min ride on the JetSki is also available at the Marine Park in PortBlair (Cost 550 for one person or 750 for two for a 10 min ride)
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc. For somebody who has ample time to stay in Andaman no real planning is required and one can see the place at their own pace and taste but for someone who has limited time and would like to see most of the places mentioned earlier, some planning would help.
Try not to reach Port Blair on a Sunday as the main market is closed on Sundays and Mahatma Gandhi Marine Park is closed on Mondays. As of now, there are only three flights to Port Blair , via Chennai that I know of, and all of them reach in the morning. You would surely need some time to rest and get ready to start roaming around. The InterIsland ferries or the boats for the 3 Island tour leave by around 10 am so such a trip can be planned for some other day, not the first day of your travel. One could visit the local market at Port Blair and the Acquarium on the first day and then visit the Cellualar Jail in the late afternoon and end the 1st day expedition with a Light and Sound Show at the Jail and get a good amount of rest in the night. It gets dark quite early, about 5PM, so not much can be planned in the night except may be visiting the market. Stay at some hotel close to the Airport would be advisable on the 1st day. TSG Emerald is a good option with comfortable rooms and proximity to the Airport, about 15 mins and 30 Rs ride from the Airport on Auto.
For the second day, a trip to the 3 islands, Mahatma Gandhi Marine park or Baratang can be planned. The hotel staff should be contacted on Day 1 to help in the bookings. Wandoor Beach in Port Blair is also a nice place to visit. Ignore anybody offering you snorkelling or the glass bottom ride at the Wandoor beach. I don't think its really worth it. But yes, a ride on the speedboat there is fun. It cost us about 200 per head. Wandoor beach is about 26 kms from the main city i.e. 45 mins ride. Mahatma Gandhi Marine park is also close to the Wandoor beach.
The cost of travel for us from City to Wandoor or vice-versa was Rs 400 on auto and Rs 800 on taxi.
This should more or less cover most of the places to be seen in Port Blair. Next, one should plan the trip to Havelock Island. Havelock is an island about 2 hrs ride away from Port Blair.
There are two kind of ferries of operating from PortBlair to Havelock. Govt Ferries charging Rs 250 or 350 and starting at 7 am and taking about 2 hrs and 30 mins and a private operator Makruzz charging Rs 650 and taking about 1 hr and 30 min starting at 0900 AM.
I would highly recommend atleast a couple of days stay at the Havelock.
One can easily get a two wheeler on hire at Rs 250 per day. There are no petrol pumps but one can buy Petrol at Rs 50 from small petrol 'bunks'. I also saw a new axis bank ATM coming up in Havelock during our visit. I guess it would become operational in another month or so.
The return ferry from Havelock is available at 11:30 am on Mon, Wed, Fri and 3:00 pm on Tue, Thu, Sat (and I guess Sun as well) for Govt Ferries and 4:00 PM for Makruzz (private operator).
A visit to the elephant beach with some snorkelling and a visit to Radhanagar beach is a must while at Havelock. Elephant training camp is also popular but it was kindof OK to visit. I didn't see any elephants there.
Have a safe journey :)
