I visited the Andamans much before the Tsunami, so things might be a it different now. Port Blair is a good little town with Bengalis & South Indians in equal measure. The winding up and down rodas lead you to lovely beaches. Hindi is widely spoken and understood. But remember, you are closer to Thailand than to India.Food, sight-seeing and shopping
Beaches & nearby islands are the highlights. Chriya Tapu, not far from Port Blair is a great Beach. Ross Island, a nearby island was the location of the British and Japanese commands during WWII. I faced the fiercest thunderstorm of my life while on this island. An incredible trip. The Cellular Jail which held Indian 'Kaala Paani' prisoners is another must see - there is a good sound & light show there. Activities & things to do
Swimming in the beaches is the best activity. Water sports are good in outlying islands. Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc.
Getting airtickets to/from Port Blair is tough during the holiday season, since local residents get subsidised tickets to get to the mainland. Book early. | |
