| divya Faridabad | 11th March 2007 | | | Narnaul | Overview of the destinationNarnaul, about 4 hours drive from Delhi, is a lesser known district of Haryana. Perhaps because there is not very much to do in this place. But it does have some interesting possibilities a few kilometres outside of it. A place where no one would decide to go for an outing, yet Narnaul has its humble offerings, especially of religious and mythological significance, like any place in India, however small or unknown does. Food, sight-seeing and shopping Within the city, one could visit Birbal ka Chhatta, a ruined tomb, Jal Mahal, a dilapidated historically significant palace, Chor Gumbad literally meaning secret dome. Extremely popular with the locals is the Rameshwar temple. No denying the temple is serene, clean and colourful. It has beautiful statues and paintings. It is believed that if you are in a fix and seeking supernatural guidance, you will get it here.
Local food is a blend of Haryanvi and Rajasthani.
Nothing particular to shop but it's interesting to get a glimpse of markets like there used to be in a bygone era, especially in the evening. Activities & things to do Heard the Hindi idiom of 'Dhosi ki pahaadi'? Completing an uphill task can be equated to climbing the Dhosi hill. Well, the real Dhosi hill is located at some distance from Narnaul. Atop it is the cave of Rishi Chyavan, where he meditated for years. Chyavan rishi is known for his agelessness and contribution to Ayurveda; the term 'chyavanprash' comes from here. The climb is not easy but certainly worth it. Do stop at the temple on the way for some interesting mythological and folk tales on its walls.
In bordering Rajasthan is the town Khetri known for its copper mines. Contact the Khetri Mines Office for an informative enjoyable day out. Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc. Route Delhi-Gurgaon-Rewari-Mahendragarh; locals are pleasantly helpful. Having your own vehicle is advised or a taxi; public transport till and within Narnaul is tolerable but not for out of town excursions.
The Dhosi climb can get excruciatingly tiring if you are not comfortable with trekking.
Mine entry has a lot of restrictions, so please do your spade work before you land up there. | |
