The annual crafts mela at the Hermitage
Overview of the destination
Surajkund is known for three things. Pleasurable long drives, aesthetically superior apartments and villas and most significantly, the annual crafts mela. Mela is held at the Haryana Tourism resort called 'The Hermitage' and is on for seven to ten days.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping
The crafts mela, hands down. Artisans and craftsmen from all over the country congregate to display and sell their wares. It is celebration time for handicraft lovers. Everything from clothes, bags, shoes, kitchenware, jewellery to writing pads, hats, furniture, tapestry, upholstery...the list is endless. The theme is a state, and each year it's different. This time it was Maharashtra, last year was Kerala. What is common every year is that people shop till their wallet and/or legs give way. more often than not, people visit more than once because it is so huge that one can hardly cover it in a day.

Activities & things to do
Joy rides for kids are mostly available. Diversity and authenticity comes across not just in wares, but in food too. Authentic cuisines of almost all states are available and very edible. Evenings witness cultural performances by troupes from different parts of the country. This time there was a group from Sri Lanka as well. Sinful indulgence is what the place calls for. Whether in the handicraft display, culinary items or cultural shows. The drive to Surajkund has a catalytic effect in bringing one here.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc.
Its best to go by one's own vehicle. During mela time, 'savaari' autos ply, having seating capacity of 8-10 people. The place is infamously crowded. Parking may be available rather far. While shoppping, bargaining is usually required.
