Mumbai | 30th May 2006 | | Nice location but worth the all the travel? | Overview of the destination
We spent in all 9 days in Himachal, 5 in Manali and 4 in Shimla. Our most surviving memories I think will be the lo...ng road distances we had to cover travelling from Delhi to Manali (600 km), then Manali to Shimla and finally Shimla to Delhi. To add to this, we flew to and fro Delhi from Mumbai (where we live) although the journeys by flights seemed fine. Manali is good, Shimla is barely okay, but the road journeys are a challenge.Food, sight-seeing and shopping
Manali offers great views of the mountains and the clean, crisp air along with pine trees was the highlight (and the key reason to travel all this distance). The Roerich art gallery was a great experience. Shimla is a real tourist trap and can be easily avoided. Not much shopping in either cities excepts tacky curious. Activities & things to do
River rafting near Manali (actually near Kulu) is worth the experience if you reasonably fit. Both Manali and Shimla offer scenic drives around the cities - to Solang in case of Manali and Chail in case of Shimla. Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc.
Getting to Manali is a real challenge. The closest major airport is Chandigarh from where Manali is about 8 hours drive, mostly on ghats (actually no need to fly to Chandigarh as the Delhi - Chandigarh highway is very good). Be prepared to motion sickness especially for kids. | |
