Nilgiris
Overview of the destination
We recently returned from the Nilgiris - mostly Avalanche and Ooty. Avalanche was literally heaven on earth, we recharged our souls there and wished we had stayed longer. It is Gods own destination for those who love nature, peace and quiet. We drove from CJB via Geddai Manjur and Yedekadu. The route is very scenic with hair pin bends and mixed jungles. We also went upto U. Bhavani dam and Bangi Thappal. Spotted bison herds, nilgiri tahr and assorted deer.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping
Ooty has all kinds of restaurants serving all kinds of food at all budgets. Bakery products are exceptionally good, the puffs, butter biscuits and cakes are to die for; as is the fudge at King Star. Jams and Nilgiri cheese are good buys. Home made chocolates are sold everywhere but dont taste the same back home. Eucalyptus oil, tea and spices as well as warm clothing are good value. Toda shawls and jewellery are pretty but overpriced.

Activities & things to do
Boating at Ooty and Pykara Lakes, long walks or just loll around at the Botanical Garden, Syms Park, the huge expanse of meadows at 9th mile, walk in the woods near Kamaraj Sagar or in the patches of shola forest along the way. Train ride to Coonoor and back is scenic. Dodabetta Peak is nice to spend time as are Kodanad View Pt, Lambs Pt, Dolphins Pt. Glenmorgan if you can get EB permission is worth a visit. Mudumalai WLS is also worth a visit as is the drive there down Kalhatty ghat from Thalaikundah.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc.
By road from Coimbatore - recommend Jagadeesh taxi service 09442370007 - safe and honest driver who knows the area well. Take the Kotagiri Mettupalaym route its very scenic, misty, tea gardens and good empty road. Road works in progress on Pykara Gudalur Rd should be completed by Apr08. Coonoor Mettupalaym Rd is also bumpy.
