The KSTDC hotel, called Mayura Velapuri or Karnataka Hotels Belur, is located a few meters before the famous Chanakesava Temple at Belur. Newly renovated and built on a spacious campus, it is equidistant to Halebidu temples, Chikamagalur, Yagachi dam, or Hassan. Lacks the frills of a homestay or resort in picturesque Chikamagalur, but for just Rs.1200 a night you get a gigantic room with AC and Sony Bravia LCD TVs, clean and big bath with hot water, power backup, extra mattress, and space for children to play safely. The service is typical government style, so expect less and you will be happy. The food is just OK. We had yummy masala vada, masala dosa, and coffee at hotel Vishnu, a small cafe opposite the temple entrance. You can book online. More » « Hide

If you are looking for a place where you can just chill, do nothing and relax, then it is ideal. A short, comfortable 3hr drive from Bangalore, the only place to stay is the beautiful Haritha resort by APTDC. Built on a large colonial property, the view and rooms are to die for. Check in and booking is a pain, with very rude and confusing systems. But once inside, the service is excellent. Don\'t miss the mini-zoo across the road and some adventure games for Rs.350 per head. There is nothing for miles around—no plastic, no vehicles, no food, not even roads. There’s no better venue for a reunion with Mother Nature. We hired an outfit called Outback adventurers to help us in the wilderness. These guys were ready for us with the first activity of the day—rafting—as soon as we hopped off the bus. Getting into the life-jackets we felt adventurous already. After a brief safety speech by Sanjeev, our expert navigator, the real thrills began. A couple of rapids tested our synchronization and strength. No one fell overboard, which was kind of disappointing! Back at the camp, the aroma of delicious chicken curry, spicy chhole and piping hot rasam beckoned us. Still in our wet clothes, we attacked the yummiest food we have had in a long time. Stuffed to the gills, we hung ourselves out on the hammocks to dry. By midnight, we crawled into our small tent and were off to Snoreville in 5 minutes. The awesome weather ensured a peaceful sleep. Woke up only at 6 to the sound of “Trekking at 7, saar. Please have tea and be ready!”. This time we went up a short hill. We struggled in our Nikes and Reeboks while our guide leapt like a mountain goat in Hawai chappals. More » « Hide

We should\'ve anticipated the service excellence of ONV from the way they detailed every turn and lamp-post in the \'Directions to reach us\' page of their website. Despite a route going through villages, we were there in 90 minutes without a single U-turn. You pass through beautiful grasslands just before the property looms up, nothing more than a bunch of thatched huts. The yummy jaljeera and garland welcome is just the beginning. The bellboys, waiters and executives are ALWAYS smiling and wishing you well. Something extremely rare in Bangalore hotels. The room is a delight, very airy and well lit. The natural incense fills the air with a dizzy aroma. We hop over for lunch and get the best fish ever. The homely, caring service just makes it tastier. Then there are the activities-- everything from pottery to milking the cows, to gilli-danda and kite-flying, to dirt-cycling and bullock cart rides. For our toddler, there were pups and kittens and geese and turkeys and goats and god-knows-what else to keep chasing. Not to forget the unique and refreshing \'pond-pool\' which is a must-see, must-dip. By the end of the trip, we were looking at the calendar planning our next visit. More » « Hide
