If you want to experience unspoilt backwaters of kerala, then I would suggest the backwaters of Alleppey! We (six family members) planned a houseboat vacation in Alleppey. there are about 600 houseboats in operation in Alleppey & there are 2D/1N , 3D/2N , single day packages in boats of various sizes - 1BR/2 BR/3BedRooms. Every boat has 3 crewmen who double as captain/steward/chef etc. The boat starts at around noon and halts at a common docking place at arnd 5:30PM. The cruise is along the narrow canals opening to big wide streams studded with paddy fields/coconut groves along the sides. You can lie down in your bed and see the sprawling backwaters from your bedroom window which makes it a perfect holiday! 'The more , the merrier' is a perfect phrase for a house boat cruise. It works out cheaper (per person) if there are more pax in a house boat. a 3 BR houseboat is very spacious and has lot more moving space for 6 pax. Dont worry too much about Sundeck (upper deck). If you dont have one in your houseboat then you dont lose much in your cruise. There are no sundecks in boats that leave from Allepey and reach Kumarakom. plan a cruise that leaves from Allepey and reaches Kumarakom the next day.
