Honestly, after visiting the website of the property, one’s expectations of getting good service and hospitality, which Rajasthan is famous for, are raised. However, the actual position is far from it and the saying “appearances are deceptive” fits this place very aptly. The location is in a residential area, with of course no views from the balcony that they boast of………except of the clothesline/ terraces/ walls of the neighbouring houses. The lack of basic hospitality and the careless lackadaisical attitude of the staff members, including the General Manager, was utterly shocking and disgusting. I am sure that Government hotels would be far superior in service, and that too for a more reasonable price. I hope that Umaid Mahal pulls up its socks real tight, sooner than later, in order to justify the tariff that they are charging and to be truly classified as a ‘heritage property’. It is disappointing to note that lately, our selection of hotels based on the reviews posted on HolidayIQ have been very unpleasant. Earlier in the month of May this year, when we were in Bangalore, we stayed in ‘The Elite’, but the experience was appalling. In the past, I have been religiously relying on this website for my travels. However, with these two back-to-back unpleasant experiences, my reliability on the website for future travels is very doubtful. More » « Hide

Except the promptness in booking the room, there is unfortunately nothing that I can mention that was god about this hotel. They refer to themselves as a boutique hotel, which of course raised our hopes about the place. To start with, the location - the hotel is facing a garbage yard and a garage/ motor repair centre. So the entrance, it seems, set the tone for our stay. Despite booking about a month in advance, the room that was allotted to us (306) was on the top floor at the back, and less than half the size that was portrayed at the time of booking. On inquiry, we were told that all rooms were occupied and this would be a stop gap arrangement. Since we were heading for Shravanbelagola the same day (which is a day trip from Bangalore), we requested them to keep the room ready by the time we return in the evening. When we went to freshen up in the bathroom, it was stinking, because the windows opened towards another dumpyard on the side. Ignoring the stink, when the shower was opened in the bath cubicle, it became overflooded since the drainage pipe was totally blocked ! On complaint, they provided us the bathroom of another room (301), which supposedly was being readied for us. The room size was decent, but the bathroom was merely 5ft x 5ft and to top it all, the bathing area had a pillar next to the shower, thereby restricting the movement altogether. The shower was broken and throwing water everywhere in the bathroom. Given the state of affairs, we asked the staff to show us an alternative room before we departed for our onward journey. We were shown a room on the 2nd floor which apparently seemed better. However, to our surprise, when we cam back in the evening at about 11pm, we were shown another room on the ground floor by the front desk as that on the 2nd floor was no more available. When we refused to stay in that room which was pretty dingy, we were taken again to the 3rd floor and shown room 303, which seemed like a decent size and the bathroom bearable. Tired by a long day\'s journey (started from Delhi at 4am to catch a 6.30am flight and now almost being midnight), we checked in only to spend the night, not having any other choice. But that was not the end of our woes - the bedsheets were soiled and did not seem to have been changed. So we called housekeeping, requested for change of sheets, which was done at their own easy pace. Before hitting bed, we decided to check out the next morning, though originally we were booked for 2 nights. When we went for breakfast the next morning, we had sounded the front desk for finalising our accounts since we were checking out. However, even after all our luggage was at the reception, the bill was not finalised, apparently because the computer was not working. We asked for a manual bill but that too was denied since the manager was not traceable in his office. When we asked the front desk to locate him, they refused to budge from their place. Thoroughly annoyed, we gave them our forwarding address (of the new hotel where we were shifting) and asked them to send our bill. It was only then that movement happened - suddenly the manager was traceable, the computer system started working and the bill was generated ! We had shortlisted this hotel on reading some good reviews on HolidayIQ. But for us, it was a highly disappointing experience at The Elite, and I would not recommend it to anyone. I am sure each one of us, who makes advance booking, works on the premise to spend the maximum time exploring the city than wasting time looking for a decent accommodation, thus having peace of mind. We were in Bangalore for two nights only and had to start from scratch the next day after a harrowing experience at The Elite. But thanks to some acquaintances, we got an amazingly great place - The Melange service apartments - very close to the UB City. A wee-bit expensive, but worth any day, because we are talking about one\'s comfort here - comfort of both body and mind ! More » « Hide

Mukteshwar - a great location for those who love to be away from the humdrum of city life.........calmness, serenity and the stillness of the mountain life are your companions at the place, and the hotel also respects the same. They let you be by yourselves and are only available at your call - the signs \'do not disturb\' are redundant here ! Morning/ evening walks are pretty refreshing - the weather very unpredictable : clouds and the sun playing hide-n-seek perpetually. View of the Himalayan ranges as also the sunset, which are so much talked about, gave us a miss as it was cloudy most of the time of our stay. Mukteshwar is also a hub of herbs - basil, parsley, thyme, rosemary, oregano - all are available here. So pasta lovers should not forget to pick up their seasonings ! More » « Hide

Rudraprayag, Uttaranchal

This town is situated on the prayag of the Mandakini river (coming from Kedarnath) and the Alaknanda river. The hotel staff intimated us about two temples nearby worth visiting before we leave for Delhi. These were the Koteshwar cave of Lord Shiva and the Umara Narayan temple of Lord Vishnu, which became our next days itinerary. Though only a few kms away from the main Rudraprayag market, the Koteshwar cave is very close to the Alaknanda river flowing through the Rudraprayag region and hence, the walk downhill, and thereafter uphill, is pretty steep but worth it. The cave is housed with innumerable shivlings (and hence the name Koteshwar) and has natural water droplets sprinkling from the cave roof. Next destination was the Umara Narayan temple which is only a few kms away. The priest at the temple apprised me that the name has been derived from a tree called umara, similar to the name of Badrinath where there was a forest of badri berries, once upon a time. Back into the hotel after another long day, we sat in our balcony for the daily evening aarti at the Rudraprayag ghats, which was truly relaxing. More » « Hide
