Elephanta Caves is an over-rated tourist destination 1hr away from Mumbai by a ferry which you need to take from the Gateway Of India. They charge Rs. 120 for a return trip. However once you are in the boat if you need to sit on the higher level of the boat they charge you Rs 10 extra per head which is just day light robbery by the boat attendant to make some quick bucks...
Once you get there..you are greeted by the toy train which caters to all who believe in conserving their energy...however they charge you Rs. 10 per head for this too.
If you choose to walk you will come across a lot of small stalls on route where you will find highly overpriced artefacts which is mainly aimed at gullible foreigners..but if you bargain you could pull off quite a good deal.. You have to pay Rs 5 once you have to actually enter the pathway to the caves.
You have to walk up a highly commercialised path up towards the entrance of the caves. At these shops you can bargain and get things for 3/4th the price they quote. Once you reach the top of the path you need to pay Rs 10 to enter the caves.
There are a total of 5 caves to be seen. The sculptures were disfigured but the good news is that they are being restored.
