Viswabharati is perhaps the world's first every open-air university founded by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. It is located in Santiniketan in West Bengal's Birbhum district, originally the habitat of adivasi tribes who still sell their handicrafts at Santiniketan at the Saturday fair. Santiniketan is a University town and the most common transport used are the bicycle and the cycle rickshaw. The environment within the University complex is not tarnished by skyscrapers and shopping malls that make every Indian city look like the next one. It has an air of freshness about it with muddy roads that kick up dust almost all through the year.Summer is very hot and winter is extremely chilly but the Poush Festival in December warms up the surroundings as thousands of tourists from across the world flood in to take part in the festival filled with song, poetry, flowers and a wonderful country fair where the attraction is mainly the musical duel performed by the Bauls and the Fakirs in the evening. If you are looking for Big Burgers and Mac Donalds you will be disappointed More » « Hide

The manager, Ayan is very friendly, warm and helpful. The staff is mainly drawn from the rural population around Santiniketan. They bring a rustic, earthy touch to the ambience adding to the browns and the siennas of the place. The room is spacious with a well-maintained toilet. We had a garden facing room in front where we could slide the glass windows and take a look at the lush green mantle of enchantment in the garden outside, tended to with affection by the gardener and his staff. The location is ideal for people visiting Viswabharati University because it is almost walking distance from the hotel. The food could be better and more reasonably priced. The two-day stay added a breeze of fresh air to our jaded spirits snuffed out in the noise and the bustle of the city of Kolkata. We would want to visit Banshori again preferably in winter next year. It was a short trip of four days. The whiff of fresh, unpoluted air we breathed after the polluted air of Kolkata gave us a fresh lease of life. The blue skies, the green fields, the lovely gardens took our breath away and of course, the wine factory owned by Danny Denzongpa and the football stadium Baichung Bhuita played in were wonderful.
