Though some parts of the wall are in ruins, one can see good views of the wall from the following points: Badaling Section, Simatai, Jinshanling, Gubeikou etc.

The architecture of this place gives an understanding of an ancient Chinese thought of ‘The heaven is round and the earth is square’ since the northern part of wall enclosing the temple is semicircular representing the heaven and the southern part is square representing the earth.

There are several magnificent buildings within the walls - The Circular Mound Altar (Yuanqiutan), Imperial Vault of Heaven (Huangqiongyu) and Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest (Qiniandian). Also, there are some additional buildings like Three Echo Stones and Echo Wall. Almost all of the buildings are connected by a wide bridge called Vermilion Steps Bridge (Danbiqiao) or called Sacred Way

The Vermilion Steps Bridge
which is 360 meters long and 30 meters wide, connects the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest and the Imperial Vault of Heaven. The emperors in the past believed that they could go to heaven through this Bridge, which is why this bridge is also called Sacred Way.
