Bangalore was all agog on February 2 when President Pratibha Patil flagged off the "Golden Chariot" Karnataka’s first luxury train. This super-luxury train will now join the ranks of Rajasthan’s “Palace on Wheels” and Maharashtra’s “Deccan Odyssey”. Starting from Bangalore the train will take tourists to Mysore, Kabini, Hassan, Hospet, Goa, and back to Bangalore in a span of seven days. “This seven-day journey will be like a travel through the history and culture of Karnataka, which is rich and varied,” the President said.

The train has 17 thematically designed coaches named after the great dynasties of Karnataka – such as Kadamba, Hoysala, Rashtrakuta, Chalukya, and Vijayanagara, to name a few. Each cabin is designed to reflect the heritage of the past, with antique furniture, silk sheets, paintings on the walls and attached baths.

The train also has restaurants for fine dining, a fully-stocked bar, an ayurvedic center, spa, gym, and conference coach.

An added perk in the Golden Chariot is wi-fi connectivity and satellite antennae. Each cabin has a plasma TV allowing passengers to watch any channel live. Mr Sajivve Trehaan, CEO of The Luxury Trains which markets all the luxury trains in India, told press persons: “Most luxury trains do not offer television in the cabins, and are restricted to lounge areas only. Besides, live programmes cannot be accessed since satellite dish are not made available. The Golden Chariot is the first train in the world to offer this amenity.”

Priced at USD 350 per person per night, it is an attractive package for the up-end Indian tourist or international traveler. Also aimed at are NRIs who are keen to explore Indian heritage with their families, as well as experience train travel in India. The train will start commercial operations from March 3; before that it will hold two trial runs in the month of February.
