For those of you who love to take short breaks just to get away from the tedium of urban life, we have the right
prescription – now plan your weekend breaks by distance AND type of holiday. Here we feature options you can experience from the top 5 cities in India:

The hustle and bustle of busy Mumbai is all the more reason why you should take frequent week-end breaks. And the possibilities are enormous. You have your choice from the sea, to the hills, and the forests.

The Arabian Sea is dotted with exciting sea-side locations – big and small. You can drive to some places, while the ferry service from various points in Mumbai is another convenient way of getting there. Take your pick from Madh-Marve (0-100km), Alibaug, Kashid, Murud-Janjira (all within a 200km range) and other beaches.

The scenic Western Ghats are another choice of week-end getaways from Mumbai. A number of delightful hill-stations are accessible from the Mumbai-Pune expressway and you can make your choice from sleepy Matheran and Khandala (a little over 100km), to the more happening Mahabaleshwar (201-300km) and Lonavala. If you are the laid-back sorts, simply soak in the mountain views and fresh oxygen rich air. If you are the outdoors types, go for treks, rock climbing and jungle walks.

You can take your pick from different holiday experiences near and about Bangalore. One of the most relaxing options is to check into an ayurvedic spa resort, within close driving distance (less than 100km), and rejuvenate yourself completely.

For culture lovers there are some outstanding heritage sight-seeing places such as Mysore, Srirangapatnam (both within 101-200km distance), and Hampi (301-350km). Equally astounding is the choice of natural destinations around the Bandipur, Kabini Reservoir and Nagarhole (all within a 201-300km range from Bangalore), where you can revel in wildlife watching, boating, fishing, camping, jungle walks and treks.

For those looking for mountain/hill experiences, romantic destinations such as Ooty and Yercaud (both 201-300km range) are just a few hours’ drive away. Beach lovers can choose either of the coasts – Mangalore or Coastal Malabar (301-350km) on the west coast or Pondicherry (201-300km) on the east.

The capital city offers some of the grandest week-end getaway experiences. The Taj Mahal, the wonders of the Pink City and the most popular Himalayan hill-stations on the tourism map.

Choose your week-end break according to your interest. If you are a history lover, steep yourself in the past of the ancient Moghul and Rajput monuments. Head for the mega-destinations like Agra, Jaipur and Rishikesh (all less than 300km from Delhi), or seek quiet seclusion in a smaller place like Gwalior (301-350km).

To escape the heat and dust of the plains, head for the Himalayan heights. If you enjoy the company of others, activities, entertainment and shopping go to larger hill-stations such as Shimla (less than 350km) and Nainital (301-350km). Solitude lovers can head for off-beat destinations such as Parwanoo (approx 250km) or Mukteshwar (301-350km).

Sunderbans National Park, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and home to an astounding variety of wildlife including the endangered Royal Bengal Tiger is less than 100km away.

For those into culture, the university town of Santiniketan (180km) offers a quite getaway.

Along the coast of the Bay of Bengal are many favourite sea-side towns that offer a short break. The most popular of these beach haunts is Digha (187km from Kolkata), a worthy weekend getaway for moments in the sun and sand, along with delicious fresh sea food, and hours of peace and quiet.
