Achalgarh Overview

Ranked 17 of 36 sightseeing in Mount Abu

Achalgarh is a small village, which is situated near Rajmachi and is famous for its old fort. Within the fort lies the Achaleshwar Mahadev Temple. The Achalgarh Fort was constructed by Rana Kumbha of Mewar during the 14th century. This structure was built for protecting the region and keeping an eye on the movements of enemies. There is a semicircular arch at the entrance of the fort and includes temples dating from the 15th century and 16th centuries.

The main deity in the Achaleshwar Mahadev Temple is Lord Shiva and the local inhabitants believe that there are footprints of the deity on the holy rock. There is also a huge brass structure of Nandi along with three large stone buffaloes in the temple complex. Achalgarh Fort is located approximately 11 km north of Mount Abu and has two main entrance gates.

The first gate is called Hanumanpol and the second is known as Champapol. Hanumanpol serves as the main entrance to the lower fort, while the later is the gateway to the inner fort.

Ready to climb

Achalgarh fort is about 11 km from Mount Abu on hill side. Fort is not maintained, but people visit here out of adventure. On way to fort (from Achalgarh village) there is a point where Mr. Krishna Ballabh & Mrs. Shanta Sahu set some telescope which will give you excellent view of some points of Mount Abu. Do visit Shiv temple and Jain temple around the fort. You can drive up to the Jain temple on way to fort.

Nothing to see

We went to this place by considering the fort location but fort is not available at all. Only few broken walls are available so it is not advisable to visit this place and waste the time.

An old and not so maintained, Majestic Fort

Achalgarh and the Achalgarh fort is located at an hours drive from the city of Mount Abu, and is famous amongst tourists for visiting the Achaleshwar Mandir located on the foothill. Very few people visit the fort though. We visited the fort. The climb in the fort is steep flight of stairs which is very very tiring and unless you go there on a pleasant day, you might not even want to go all the way up, which happened with us. We crossed the Hanuman Pool and went a little more ahead of that, but then we gave up since we were tired and had also run out of drinking water. We returned down from there. Anyways, the inside of the fort is very isolated, even the climb, and it has not been maintained so much so basically we did not regret returning back so much.Overall it is an okay place to visit, but make sure you carry enough water and food in case you are planning to climb all the way up (Food and water is available in the market on the foothill so you can just buy from there also).

You get beautiful Bangles and local articles at good price

The Shiva, Vishnu, and other Gods' temple in the premise was under construction when we went there. There is no fee but you can donate money for the temple. Its an old place with old marble, carvings, etc. Nice and peaceful. Parking is available here. You can get a bike on rent and travel Mount Abu on Bike.In the parking we found a local boy saying that he can be our Guide, took Rs 30 and told a short story of the place and few shayaris. The local market outside the temple has Paintings Shop, Bangles Shop. You can buy gift items from them. I bought like 10-20 pairs of different different kind of Rajasthani bangles for gifting in good rate.

The temple of Mata ji, situated in the heights

If you are going to Gurushikhar, Achalgarh comes on the way. The main attraction of this place is the temple of Mata ji, situated in the heights, and a small pond that has statues of three buffaloes.
