Amrithaghateswarar Shrine Overview

Ranked 2 of 3 sightseeing in Thirukkadaiyur

The Amrithaghateswarar Shrine is dedicated to Amrithaghateswarar, an incarnation of Lord Shiva. The temple spreads over an area of 11 acres and has five prakarams, mandapams and towers.

It was built in the traditional Chola architectural style in the 11th century by the Chola kings. There are three holy water tanks in the temple, namely the Kaala Theertham, Maarkandeya Theertham and Amrita Pushkarini.

The important festivals celebrated at this temple are the Brahmotsava, Shankhabhishekam, Kartik Poornima, Navratri and Aadi Pooram. Local people believe Lord Shiva rescued the sage Markendeya from Yama, the Lord of Death, at this temple.

Oldest famous temple with a great history

The temple is the oldest and one of the most famous temples in India. People of all ages and states come here to get married. This temple is well known for marriages since people believe that if they get married here, they will lead a happy and healthy long life. The main deity is Shiva, however the temple is known by his consort as Abirami Devi temple. There is a story of a guy who was 16 and when his life was about to be taken by lord Yama, he was saved by lord Shiva and granted Chiranjeevi boon (a person who will not die). You must visit this temple when you come to Tamilnadu, this is a very important and famous temple in south India.
