Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge Overview

Ranked 2 of 23 sightseeing in Rameswaram

Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge is also known as the Pamban Bridge. This bridge is over 2.34 km long and was constructed with sufficient elevation. The Pamban Bridge is major source for connecting the Rameshwaram Island with the main land. It took over 14 years to construct this bridge, which was finally inaugurated in 1988.

The bridge is designed in a shape of a bow which enables ships to pass beneath it. It is the second longest bridge in India, after the newly constructed Bandra-Worli sea link. There are around 143 pillars that support this bridge, out of which 64 were built in the sea.

This bridge is also called as the Pamban Rail Scissors Bridge, which is the longest rail bridge. Previously, this railway bridge carried only meter-gauge trains, but was upgraded by Indian Railways to carry broad-gauge trains. This project was finished in August 2007 and since then broad-gauge trains are operational on this bridge.

Awesome sea colour

Crossed the rail bridge twice by train in 2nd sitting class. So experienced the magic of travelling on the sea by train. Once it was drizzling and the sea colour was in different shades of grey. In return it was sunny and the sea colour was sea green. Magnificent to look all around. From road bridge we saw a train crossing the Pamban Bridge. Took a video of that. Awesome experience. Never to forget. Also the wind above the bridge was so strong that one has to hold the camera tightly in hand.

India's 2nd longest road bridge

You wish or not but you have to visit and cross this bridge when you are entering into Rameshwaram by road. We entered and stopped on this road while going and returning from Rameshwaram and made some photography. The bridge is constructed across the sea connecting the Rameshwaram Island with mainland. This 2.5 km long bridge was built in 1987 and is going to be renovated. A nice place for photography and from here you can see Pamban Railway bridge also just parallel to this one. A nice visit.

Wonderful !!

This bridge is called pamban bridge. The view from the top of bridge is very nice. When we visited, the railway bridge was opening to pave way for ship and we were lucky to see that. The water looks green from the top.

Good bridge but be careful of your belongings

Known as Pamban Bridge. It is on the way to Rameswaram. The wind is too strong, Take care of your belongings in your hand. And watchout for vehicles as there is no designated parking area in the bridge :).

An engineering marvel

An engineering marvel. One can watch the trains going on the pamban bridge, if you lucky in the evening. Equally great to see this bridge from a moving train.

Beautiful view, one of the best attraction

One of best and most famous view point. Adjacent to the oldest and the longest rail bridge that is just above the sea level. Watching a train go over it is a amazing experience. And the view of the blue sea water is spectacular to find one in India.
