Anthropological Museum Overview

Situated on MG Road in the western part of Port Blair, the Anthropological Museum is one of the most visited places in town. It is maintained by the Anthropological Survey of India. The museum illustrates the tribal life and culture. It has an exhibition of the tools and weapons that are used by the tribes as well as photographs showing the different tribes, existing and extinct.

There are also items and collections showing the history of the island archipelago, a library with books of different types and by various authors who have written widely on the Union Territory.

Sometimes, the museum also organises documentaries and short films showing the life of the tribes and the different social customs and cultures of the Union Territory.

A must visit destination in Andaman

It was the last day of our package tour in Andaman and till then we had to cover some must visit points in the city. Anthropological museum was one of them. It is a well maintained museum. It is located on the MG road in Port Blair. The museum offers the highlights of ancient spans of Jarawas, the Onges, the Sentinelese, the Shompens and the Nicobarese. Photography is prohibited. It is a must visit destination in Andaman.

This museum is a must visit as it gives a detailed insight into the local culture and also about Jarawas which are the native tribe of the region.After all its always interesting to get to know more about the local cultural specially when the natives are tribals and still exist desolated from the ways of life of today's world.

It is must watch place and a place of tourist attraction in Port Blair. We have enjoyed the museum visit. Generally tour packages does not include this property but one can visit in spare time.

Visit to understand the lifestyle of the Adivasis

It was amazing to see the lifestyle and how the various Tribes/Adivasis are living and the tools being used by them for hunting. Even today some places in the forest are not accessible to understand better the living condition of the settlers there. Truly, one can understand the history of these tribes by visiting Museum in Port Blair.
