Arignar Anna Zoological Park is situated at Vandalur, which is about 35 km from the city of Chennai. Arignar Anna Zoological Park originated within Chennai city near Park Town in the year 1855. But due to expansion, it was moved out of the city in 1877.

In 1979, the zoo was shifted to Vandalur Reserve Forest which gave it the name ‘Vandalur Zoo’. Vandalur Zoo was renamed as Arignar Anna Zoological Park after the famous Tamil politician, Arignar Anna.

Arignar Anna Zoological Park, which was opened to the public in 1985, is considered among the largest zoos in South Asia. The zoo is home to more than 170 species of mammals, birds and reptiles.

Lion Safari Park and Deer Safari Park are the other major attractions of this zoo where the animals can be seen in their natural habitat. Elephant Safari is also very popular. Nocturnal Section, Reptile Section, aquarium and library are the other features of Arignar Anna Zoological Park.

A place to enjoy with children

The place arignar anna zoological park was really hidden in the city. A place where the children would definitely enjoy. There are lot of facilities arranged by the tamilnadu government to visit around the zoo. There is specific areas for all animals, reptiles and birds. The different kind of species would make you admire.

A must visit place for the family holidays

This zoo is occupied in around "7kms of forest area" with wild variety of species. I visited this place during this March with my friends on completion of my exams. For relaxation. It is the "best place for nature lovers". But it is not well-maintained old zoo with beautiful species. At the "time of visit the butterfly park was also closed" it takes around "4hrs to complete view" of the zoo and entry pass is 100/- each. And the birds cage grill is so small so that we cannot take photograph even from the hole. And rented bicycles are available for the ride in the zoo in groups. I suggest you to go to the owls section as you will die with suffocation there but left of that overall experience in zoo is good. And must visit place for the family holidays.

This park is well-maintained but not upto the standards

It is one of the smallest park of zoo with in the city of "Chennai, near to Raj bhavan" which is not more covered in 2. 8kms. And it is great place to have family picnic. This park hosts a variety of endangered deers, foxes, monkeys and snakes. "This park is well-maintained but not upto the standards". And this park is "restricted to the entry without a guide" with us. And this place has "good food restaurants inside so no need to worry about food inside" but the cages here are too small for the animals inside. This place is neatly maintained with garden and trees too so dont miss out this place to relax out from the city climate of dust and chemical for the nature lovers. And this zoo is mainly covered with many college students at the time of my visit and the reason is that so because of many colleges occupied around it.
