Auroville Overview

Ranked 3 of 169 sightseeing in Pondicherry

Auroville City is considered to be a ‘City of Dawn’ that is situated around 8 km from the main town of Pondicherry. It lies on the East Coast Road and was founded by Mirra Richard in 1968. This city was designed by the French architect Roger Anger with the purpose of achieving human unity. The word Auroville essentially means a universal town, where people can live peacefully, irrespective of nationality, colour, caste and creed.

Auroville was officially inaugurated on 28th February, 1968 and was endorsed by UNESCO and the Government of India. During its inauguration, soil from over 124 countries was placed and mixed inside a lotus shaped urn, symbolising universal oneness. Auroville was built to welcome people from all over the world to live together and explore scientific, educational, cultural and spiritual pursuits as per the Auroville charter.

Tourists can visit the Auroville Information Centre and Matrimandir (meditation hall with one of the biggest man-made crystal balls in the world). Matrimandir has a unique architectural shape, which was conceived by Alfassa, resembling ‘a symbol of universal mother’. It has around twelve gardens, future lakes, banyan tree, twelve petals and an amphitheatre.

The residents of Auroville are engaged in administration, handicrafts, agriculture, commerce, education, healthcare, alternative technology and development projects. There is a visitor centre located near Bharat Niwas, which is the Indian National Pavilion in Auroville’s International Zone. It has a permanent exhibition on philosophy and the history of the project.

This information centre offers brochures, books and leaflets about Auroville. The centre also has three boutiques, a cafeteria and a bookshop inside the attraction. Presently, Auroville covers an area of about 2 square miles, resided by over 1,900 members from 40 different countries.

Auroville is one of the best places that you should go for if you like peace, greenery and nature. I went there in november and it was raining, everything was so green. This place had a different atmosphere of its own. Completely surrounded by forest. Simplicity and the architecture there was alone so good that there can't be any words to explain it. The only thing you should keep in mind is matrimandir the concentration hall you have to get bookings done on a prior basis and that too personally not online but that's worth it.

Calm, beautiful and lovely

There is a constant sound of wave that will accompany you if you decide to stay next to the beach in Auroville. It's like breathing but better and more peaceful. Auroville seaps in to your soul and makes everything much more beautiful and calm. It's a place like no other.

Auroville time

It is an experimental city, situated in Tamil Naidu and Puducherry. The city was made by Mira Alfssa ie Mother and designed by Roger Anger. Auroville is famous for its Matrimandir - a golden metallic ball situated in the center of town and the township. When you visit the place you can feel the fresh air and peace in environment.

Much Ado

Unless you are a diehard Bhakt it is difficult to comprehend what the fuss is about. Yes am sure living there will be a fulfilling experience. And perhaps the inside of the Matrimandir must be enriching ( For getting a pass to go inside you have to make at least two visits but staring at a golden orb from a distance is vacuous

Place to realise life in your soul

Its a place for people those who wants to feel beauty of life, meaning of life, meaning of duty, aim of life, this is not place to enjoy with family and get only snaps. Long back in the year 1998-99 I visited MATRIMANDIR that it was under construction and no restriction in entry and to see the SOUL of MATRIMANDIR the CRYSTALL. This time I and my family was unlucky that could not see the place and CRYSTALL. THE DIVINE LIGHT which I can feel in me. I went on 21st Dec and saw the can's express in word.

A very unique experience

Pondicherry is famous for the Aurobindo ashram and Auroville's Matrumandir.Though the ashram is situated in Pondicherry town, Auroville is a bit out of town and one has to take a rick costing sox Rs 550 for return trip, or have your own vehicle to reach there. It's best to reach there before 9 am, and check in for a video screening about Auroville history, at the information center. After which, you can obtain passes to visit the beautiful Matrumandir for the next day. This is a bit surprising as you have to travel twice in two days. However, if in Pondicherry, it's a must to experience the beautiful gardens and the inner parts of a unique spherical shaped Matrumandir, where you can meditate in absolutely fantastic circular hall where a beam of sunlight falls on a clear crystal ball creating a unique environ for meditation. The Matrumandir is surrounded by beautiful greenery, fountains and a huge banyan tree. Those who have passes are only allowed in batches for this very unique experience. But, if you do not have time and patience, you can walk down to a viewing area from where the spledure of greenery and the golden spherical Mandi can be seen and photographed.
