Bada Bagh Overview

Ranked 9 of 52 sightseeing in Jaisalmer

Bada Bagh or Big Garden is located 6 km from Jaisalmer on the Ramgarh road. During the 16th century, this garden was commissioned by Maharawal Jait Singh and was completed by his son Lunakaran. This garden includes a tank and a dam, along with a Govardhan Stambh (pillar).

The pillar was constructed for commemorating the construction of the nearby tank and dam. Locals refer to the dam as Jait Bandh, while the tank is known as Jait Sar. The Jait Bandh is a huge structure measuring over 1,200 feet in length and 350 feet in width. Both the tank and dam has been constructed using solid blocks of stone.

Bada Bagh is also famous for the Cenotaphs or the monuments that were built by numerous Bhatti rulers. Cenotaphs are also known as chattris and one cenotaph is erected for each ruler. The cenotaph of Maharawal Jait Singh (1470-1506) is the oldest of all. The building of cenotaphs was discontinued in 1947, when a prince died due to a mysterious disease.

Rickshaws and cabs are available for reaching this garden near Jaisalmer.

The memorial place

Bada Bagh is one among many icons of Jaisalmer. This is the place where the causal kings were cremated. It still stands as the private property of the raja family. Once you visit this, please don't forget to hire a guide and ask about the custom that the kings and people once followed there. The guide that I took, Mr. Aryan is an excellent guy and his contributions were excellent to make the visit a memorable one. This place is just 6 km or so, away from Jaisalmer City on the way to Khuri village or Sam. The entry ticket per head is Rs. 100, with no extra cost for camera. Ideal for maximum 2 hours.

Final resting place

You can find the mausoleums of the royalty here. A calm and serene place. Good to spend a calm and peaceful time. Slightly away from the city. There is a small pond surrounding this place.

Okay place and not much to do here

Okay place. If you are interested in history and their story then only you go with and see this place. Children will not like this place as this is far from other points. Especially go to this place is not worth even with the paid some amount.

Royal Cenotaphs

Site built by erstwhile King of Jaisalmer as only garden within the desert area. The site is used as remembering the Royal family after leaving for their heavenly abode. Entry charges are basis per person (Rs. 50) and camera fees (Rs. 100).Presently the spot remains attractive as many Indian films/ songs have been shot at the location. Good place for photography.Guides are available but are quite pricey. Better to do your research before you visit to enjoy the place.

Relics of the past

Bada Bagh is a short drive from Jaisalmer. There are numerous cenotaphs built in the memory of Erstwhile royalty. The carvings are quite exquisite. The view from the hilltop is also enchanting.

Picturesque Place, nice architecture

Royal Cenotaphs at Bada Bagh with Islamic and Hindu Architecture is a place for Photography lovers. Nice place with less people around and the rough terrain give best opportunity for clicking some memorable photos. It is a cremation ground of the Royal family but also place importance for the people of Jaisalmer. This is the only place in Jaisalmer where you find the fruit trees. The windmills in the backdrop gives a feeling of the marriage of history with the science. A 15 minute stop over is must and worthy.
