Badal Mahal Overview

Ranked 5 of 9 sightseeing in Kumbhalgarh

The Badal Mahal or the Palace of Clouds is situated at the top of the Kumbhalgarh Fort. This two-storied structure is divided into two interconnected distinct portions, namely, the Mardana Mahal and the Zanana Mahal.

Both the portions have rooms that are painted with pastel-coloured murals of the 19th century. The rooms are predominantly in colour schemes of turquoise, green and white and are a contrast to the grim and earthy fortress.

The Zanana Mahal comprised stone ‘jalis’ that facilitated the private viewing of court proceedings and other events by the queens. An interesting feature of these chambers is the ingenious ‘air conditioning’ system. The series of ducts of this system draw cool air into the rooms and ventilate them from the bottom.

This palace gives the feeling like floating over the clouds

Badal Mahal is also known as Palace of Clouds and it is situated at the top of the Kumbhalgarh fort and having an elevation about or more than 3500 feet from mean sea level which is considered the highest point of the fort. This palace was built by Maharana Fateh Singh in the late 19th-century, though his reign was from 1885 to 1930. This fort is surrounded by Aravalli hill ranges and by Kumbhalgarh wildlife. This palace is a double storey palace, climb is steep but comfortable pathway made easy access. Palace is having two sections known as Mardana Mahal means palace for Royal Men and Zanana Mahal means palace for royal ladies and these palaces are interconnected. The major difference in between the palaces is that Zanana Mahal is having stone screens intricately carved for royal ladies to observe the Durbar activities without coming in the eyes of public. This palace Architecture is simple Rajasthani architecture but it is attractive due to various paintings on walls, ceilings and corridors and painting of rooms and corridors is extremely sober colour scheme is used and arches, niches makes attractive, further the palace is not as grand as others in Udaipur. Central Courtyard remains significant as through this various rooms, corridors, staircases for terraces and other parts of the palaces are connected. Staircases to access the terraces are very narrow and bed rooms are having low height, doors and small though court yards and corridors are impressive. From the terrace, courtyard cenotaph and room's windows, visitors enjoy the panoramic views of Kumbhalgarh and surroundings. Railings on terraces might be added later as height is less.Mardana Mahal remain closed as the royal original paintings and furnitures are preserved in that. Restoration work is carried out in both the palaces timely so still their royal existence remain. The sky-high Palace built at a height which mesmerized the tourists. Between clouds during monsoon it appears like a magical castle or palace. After Sun-set the light and sound show remains a great attraction for visitors though this show is hosted in Hindi, after this show whole fort is light up for half an hour with special flood lights and that scene remain extremely marvellous. Tourists who love adventures and peaceful life they prefer to stay in the resorts and Hotels like Kumbhalgarh Forest Retreat, Club Mahindra, Kumbhalgarh, Dera Kumbhalgarh, Kumbhalgarh Safari Camp etc to make the trip full of joy and memorable. This palace gives the feeling like floating over the clouds. And Sunset remain a great attraction from this point among the tourists.
