Banasura Dam Overview

Ranked 2 of 50 sightseeing in Wayanad

Banasura Sagar Dam is situated 15 km north west of Kalpetta. It is the second largest earth dam in Asia and the largest in India. The dam has been constructed on Banasura Lake, situated amidst the Banasura Hills. It is believed that these hills were named after the demon king Banasura, who was the son of king Mahabali.

It is a popular picnic spot which offers boating and other recreational activities. The dam was built using big stones and boulders. This dam site is also considered to be an ideal trekking point. Tourists can visit this dam during the monsoon season, when small islands can be seen in the dam reservoir.

It was constructed under the Indian Banasura Sagar Project that was started with an aim of supporting the Kakkayam Hydro Electric Power Project. This project also aimed at contributing to the drinking water and irrigation requirements of the locals during the hot summer season.

Worth the visit

It took about 1. 5 hours to get to this eco friendly dam from Sulthan bathery. We chose to take the mini van.It was really a worth visit as you can see the real beauty of nature. Also it is one of the greatest earthWe along with kids thoroughly enjoyed the speed boat experience. The place was very nice and breezy, greenery all around. More importantly in spite of so many visitors it was pretty clean. Nice garden area toWayanad heritage museumThe museum is quite close to Alkali Caves. The museum is well maintained, clean and has a fairly good collection of things. All of them are well documented written in English and easily understandable. However this museum has limited artifacts on display. It should try to house much more so that kids can get a feeling of them and probably connect to ancient history which they ..Seeing the museum will take a time of 30 to 45 minutes .. The staff is very cooperative

Good One

This is worth a visit place in Wayanad. Do experience the speed boat. Its really worth going in for. The other boat ride is just a normal one. You do end up paying extra for the speed boat, but the experience is good.Do ask the rider to give you enough time (around 15-20 mins) for the ride. They sometime get picky about the same.

Dwell with nature, live the real life that God has made for you.

The place was really beautiful and it proves how wonderful God's creation can be. Nothing can beat nature. The climate, sightseeing and the food was top class. A must visit the place at least once in your life.

A nice destination

This is one of the best destinations in Wayanad. We had good time over there but concern is that we don't get the ticket for boating, I suggest if your looking for boating reach before 03 pm, some time they close ticket if there is a rush, apart from this travelers can get horse riding and enjoy the scenic beauty. Overall good place to spent2-3 hours. Try to get speed boating ticket.

It's s steep climb and nothing to cherish about. You will get fully tired for the day and then would just like to rest and sleep.Good coffee freshly ground is available at Rs250. 00 a kg.Don't regret if unable to visit. Cameras are charged but You can click pics using your cell.It s high time that authorities understand the concept of clicking pics.It should be made free and allowed at each and every place in the country. It's just because lazy, pot belly security guys are unable to protect, so they don't allow you to click
