Bara Bazaar (Iewduh Market) Overview

Ranked 49 of 43 sightseeing in Shillong

A huge shout-out to all the shopaholics heading towards the delightful rainy town of Shillong! Bara Bazaar has everything that you need in order to satiate your hunger for shopping, and then much more. One distinct feature of this place is that it is extremely chaotic, but you will still love roaming amongst all the chaos and discovering rare and unusual products in its many little shops.

Also called Lewduh Bazaar, meaning ‘the market of common people’, it is mainly the meat and vegetable market for the local population of Shillong. Besides groceries, the colourful market also houses innumerable shops for pocket-friendly clothes and accessories. It is a big hit among foreign tourists as it has earned popularity as the largest trade centre in the entire North East area of the country. Also, as you walk through the narrow lanes of the friendly market, you will notice that almost all the shopkeepers here are women.

Bara Bazaar used to be a part of the capital of Hima Shillong-Nongkseh and was later relocated to its current location. A number of local rituals are performed in the month of April each year, wherein locals install magnanimous monoliths and worship them. It is a truly unique place to visit when you are in Shillong!

Creating bad impression after entering shillong

First major city point after entering shillong. Poor road conditions, filth strewn around, with broken and crumbling buildings gives a poor impression, the moment an outsider enters this place. All the major hotels and motels are located here with number of shops selling their wares. Traffic is chaotic with no traffic police. Dangerous to walk on the road as vehicles move around in crazy manner. The entire stretch of road with its buildings gives an impression that you have arrived in a very old and depleted place.

Narrow streets with too many people

The Bara Bazaar also known as Lewduh Market is a good place to shop goods in cheap price. The bazar area extends to narrow streets in Shillong. One can roam around and can have good time exploring the market and buying goods in cheap price.

One long Road.

Visit if you have no other place to go. Just like any other market having all types of shops. Nothing unique.
