Bara Kaman Overview

Ranked 5 of 70 sightseeing in Bijapur

Bara Kaman is the incomplete mausoleum of Ali Adil Shah II in Bijapur, Karnataka. Ali Adil Shah, ruler of the Adil Shahi Dynasty, wanted to build a tomb of exceptional quality. According to the plan, twelve arches were to be placed vertically and horizontally around the tomb.

However, because of  some unknown reasons, the work was left incomplete. As a result, only 2 arches were placed vertically. However, the remains of the 12 arches that were placed horizontally, are also visible in the premises.
It was also planned that the shadow of Bara Kaman would touch the Gol Gombaz. At present, this site is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Half built historical architecture

The barah Kanan 12 pillars half built by the Mughals. Closed after 6 pm in evening. A location good for the people to spend some quality time. Couples are found all around the place. No fees in particular for the place. Tourists are coming on a large scale as it's in the centre of city near bus stand.

An unfinished poetry in stone

Bara Kaman is an incomplete mausoleum started by Ali Adil Shah II for his own burial. An unfinished tomb of exceptional quality was planned. Here, twelve arches were to be placed vertically and horizontally around the tomb and kept incomplete due to untimely death of the sultan. It reminds one of the uncertainties of life.

Unfinished rauza

This is one of the famous heritage unfinished structure of Bijapur. This is located in the main part of the city itself. The king of Bijapur stated to build this as a large and beautiful mausoleum in this world but was killed by his father due to the same work. This structure has tombs of some of the royal family inside it.

An okay place to see

It is just a place with few nice arches and few tombs but nothing much to see. Construction of this place is not completed. Only different shapes of Kamans are there. 10 to 15 minutes enough to take photos.

An incomplete burial mausoleum - Architectural attraction

This is situated at the centre of Bijapur town. It will be difficult to find a good parking place nearby. You can freely visit and take few photographs and make a move. You will not enjoy being there if you can't imagine the twelve vertical arches the King Ali Adil Shahi wanted to build for burial of his wives.

The dream of Adilshahi

It was the dream of Adilshahi, to build the 12 by 12 cannon, one on top of other such that, its shadow falls on the 'Gol Gumbaz'. But unfortunately Adilshahi was killed in a war so, the structure has been kept incomplete, as to remember the dream of the king.
