Basar Saraswati Temple is situated in Basar on the convergence of Godavari River and Mangira River. This temple is enshrined with the deity of Gnana Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge. This temple is among the oldest shrines dedicated to Goddess Saraswati in the country. It is believed that this temple has been constructed on the site, where Ved Vyas performed penance.   

At this site, Ved Vyas used to make idols of Goddess Saraswati, Kali and Lakshmi with sand. It is also believed that the present structure of the shrine was built by Chalukya Kings. Panchami and Navaratri festivals are celebrated on large scale in this temple. The temple is also famous for its Akshara Gnana ritual, which is celebrated for the formal start of a child's education.

2nd famous Saraswati Temple in India

Basar Saraswathi Temple is situated in a village called Basar. Basar is a village on the banks of the river Godavari. It is a census town of Adilabad district in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The village is about 50 km from Nizamabad. The temple is among the 2nd famous Saraswati Temples in India. It is dedicated to goddess Saraswathi, the goddess of knowledge and learning. A number of legends are associated with the Saraswati temple, Basar. The temple is among the 2nd famous Saraswati temples in India. Behind the temple there is a hillock with few steps, which take you to pillared hall, almost like a cave. There is a little door in the rocks that takes you down to a cave, which was believed to be the meditation hall of Veda Vyasa. This cave where Veda Vyasa performed penance to please Goddesses Saraswathi is called as "Kumar Achala". It is said that he sat here and recited entire Mahabharata and Lord Ganesha wrote it down.
