Batashiya Loop Overview

Ranked 15 of 77 sightseeing in Darjeeling

Batasia Loop is a large circular track that was created by the British to overcome an engineering glitch of the famous Darjeeling Toy Train. From Ghoom, which is the highest railway station, there’s a (nearly) 140-foot drop as the train turns back towards Darjeeling, which is an incredibly steep descent for a tiny train. So a gradual slope was created around a beautiful garden with lawns and flowers and this is Batasia Loop.

Right at the centre of the garden, a War Memorial was created in honour of the Gorkha soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the many wars post Indian Independence. It is built on a raised platform with a 30 foot high cenotaph at the base of which lies the Roll of Honour etched in stone.

The gardens offer a spectacular 360-degree view of Darjeeling's green landscape and an exhilarating view of the snow-covered peaks of the Himalayas and Kanchenjunga. There is also an Eco Garden here which gives information on organic farms and plantations in the area.

The Batasia Loop is located on Hill Cart Road and can even be accessed by taxi from Darjeeling town, and is best experienced when you take a ride on the Toy Train itself.

Beautiful views from the top of the hill

We visited Batasia Loop twice - once while taking the "toy train" joyride on Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and second time while driving around Darjeeling town. The first time was nice - the DHR train stopped at the loop for 10 minutes and everybody got down to visit the well-kept and beautiful garden in the center of the loop as well as the inspiring war memorial. But our second time was amazing - we saw the loop in its entirety from the top of adjacent hill and saw the heritage trains going around the whole loop - beautiful and spectacular.

Nature & heritage . .

The magnet-point for the tourists. Just before entering to the queen of hills Darjeeling, this place has a unique charm of nature & heritage. The toy train takes a twist here and that few minutes are really a live-time experience. A park-like place attracts tourist from all over the world from years & years.

One of the 3-point of sightseeing attraction

The three point sightseeing starts with Tiger hill followed by Ghoom Monastery and ends with Batasia Loop. The first thing which you notice at the entrance is Tea stalls and Momo stalls. Do try Momos here as they are tasty as well as low priced as compared to other places in Darjeeling where you would find Momos.Ticket costs around Rs 15-20 for adults. As you enter you will see a War Memorial just at the centre of Batasia Loop and surrounding the area is track for Toy Train. Along the length of the track many vendors sell shawls, mufflers, etc (woolen items) and you will also find traditional dresses which you can wear at a nominal rate of Rs. 50 and take pictures. We also found two guys who were showing us the mountains with telescope at a price of Rs 30.It is a good place for photography lovers as you will get a very clear view of mountains from here. There is not much to see at the place. 20 mins time is sufficient for this place.

A small station on the lap of the mountains

Batasia Loop is a halt station on the Toy Train route where the train takes a bend. The area where the train bends provides a spectacular view of the mountain ranges.

A charming place

The Batashiya Loop is the charming place of Darjeeling it is at a distance of 5 kms from city centre towards south side. This is the top of a hill & from here the beautiful aerial view of Darjeeling is feasible. More over the kanchenjunga peak is very beautiful from here. A beautiful garden & a monument of Gorkha war are the main attractions of Batashiya Loop. The beautiful boundary Indo-China, Indo Nepal etc can be seen through the telescope available with the local people on payment basis. (Rs/-10/- ) Toy train stops here for 10 minutes & allows passengers to enjoy the beauty of Darjeeling. This place is a best spot for tourists.

It is very amazing place there reach Batasia Loop at nine in the morning and you will see the most amazing spectacle ever shopkeepers with their little makeshift stalls. An curio spreads on the Railway lines wrap up their business with superb agility and speed as the toy train arrives to traverse this little loop. One a clear day the Batasia Loop renders clear views of the surrounding valleys and mountains, you don't miss it. Go there and see the real nature of our earth there. Atmosphere is very good for our health.

A nice stop over

This is an interesting place where the famous Darjeeling toy train stops over for 30 minutes or so. It offers sweeping views of the mountains and one can also marvel at the unique British engineering that makes this place particularly interesting.
