Bhimakali Temple Overview

Ranked 11 of 40 sightseeing in Shimla

The Bhimakali Temple, dedicated to Goddess Durga in the form of Bhimakali, is one of the famous Hindu shrines in the Himalayan province. Initially, the temple was the worship place of Bushair rulers of Rampur (Shimla).

The temple exhibits fine artwork of Himachali architecture, influenced by Tibetan, Buddhist and Hindu styles of architecture. The Bhimakali shrine features a slanted slate roof, golden towers, pagodas and a carved silver door. The temple along with the palaces of the royal family around the temple attracts a lot of tourists.

The 800 years old temple is believed to be among one of the 51 Shakti Peeths of Shaivite Hindus. According to Hindu mythology, the Shakti Peeths are devoted to Shakti, also known as Durga, the Mother goddess. The auspicious occasion of Dussehra is celebrated with pomp and show, with religious significance of animal sacrifice.

The small village of Saharan provides a sight of the holy peak, Srikhand Mahadev. Located at an altitude of 5,227 metres, the trek to the peak is among the poplar trekking routes. Besides, tourists also have mountaineering opportunities in the nearby villages like Bashal and Ranwin.

The temple is located in the village of Saharan of Rampur Town at a distance of 180 kilometres from Shimla. The temple can be reached by road either using public transport, HRTC buses or rented vehicles.

This is a beautiful wooden temple, also nice clean and well maintained with nice gardening. Worth a visit while in Sarahan. Preferably plan to visit in the morning.

Very pleasant and a must place to visit

It is an old temple, I love visiting old temples to see their building structure and getting a feel of how people made these awesome things. It is at the end of the Mall road in Shimla, a nice soothing place to visit, just took 20 min, so a must place to visit.

Oldest temple at Sarahan, Shimla

We went to Sarahan from Shimla during our Sangla valley trip. We stayed one night at Bhimakali Temple guest house. Temple is made of wood. Interior and exterior decoration and architecture of the temple is excellent. It's an old famous temple at this place. I think, it is is one of the 51 shakti peeths. Temple guest house is situated at temple premises also. One can feel peaceful atmosphere there. Morning and evening prayer make mind fresh. Early in the morning, surrounding views looking great. There are a large No. Of steps to reach the main temple. From the top, the view is awesome.

Shree Bhimkali Temple is so awesome

I have never seen anything like this. It goes beyond my explanation to describe it but this place has amazing energy. If you are a seeker, believer, or work with energy, you will instantly hit this point. Apparently, its one of the Shakti Peeth in India. Must go place. Who knows, you might find yourself here :)

Place is truly divine

We started from Rampur Bushehar at 08:30 AM. The road condition is good except at some places where work was in progress but up to Jhakri only. From Jhakri to Sarahan, road is in good shape. There is a 17 km hike from Jeori to Sarahan but the road presents some most beautiful scenes of the nature. It gives immense pleasure to drive by the apple orchards. It took 2 hours for us to reach Sarahan because we stopped at many places on our way and saw geographic marvels of nature. I think it is important to mention here that drinking water is very good at Sarahan. It tastes sweet and gives a complete satisfaction. We paid obeisance to Mother Goddess Bheema Kali. Then we saw old palaces of Bushehar princely state and apple orchards. There is a bird park at Sarahan on the road to Rangori but it was closed till 30th September due to the breeding season. Then we came back to Jeori and proceeded to Bhava Nagar.Note: Leather items such as wallets and belts and shoes are not allowed inside the temple. Mobile, camera, etc. are kept inside the lockers available there. However one can shoot outside the temple.

Kali Mandir

It was at a walking distance from the Ridge. When I reached the temple it suddenly started raining, we had to stay there for sometime. Many school children came there for shelter, the temple is so historic and looks ancient, but gives solace.
