Bull Temple Nandi Temple Overview

Ranked 3 of 489 sightseeing in Bangalore

Bull Temple is among the oldest temples in the city, which is dedicated to Nandi, the wagon of Lord Shiva. Associated with mythological and religious significance, the shrine is a renowned worship place.

Situated atop a mountain, the temple was built in the 16th century, during the Vijayanagara Rule. The temple is relatively small in size, but houses one of the largest Nandi sculptures in the world. It boasts a monolithic statue of deity Nandi, which is 4.5 metres tall and 6 metres long. Carved from a granite rock, the sculpture reflects Dravidian artwork.

As per mythological stories, a bull saved crops of groundnut. Since then, farmers visit this temple every year to offer their first cultivated fruit to the deity. An annual groundnut fair is organised every year near by the temple.

Ancient temple of Lord Nandi, one visit is must

The temple was made in around 1573 by Kempe Gowda, founder of Bangalore. It is dedicated to Lord Nandi ( Basavva or Bull of Lord Shiva. The bull statue is made of granite and is one of the biggest bull idol in India. The Temple is opened all the time on all days, there is no entry fees also. You can take pictures. The best part was it was not at all crowded. I could not see much crowd and it was quite clean and well maintained. It is a must visit with family to seek lord Nandi's blessings. Near to this temple there is a rock garden and Dodda Ganpati Temple too.

Quiet & serene place with God Shiva's blessings

It's been almost 5th time I have paid a visit to this place. But still love it all the more. This visit was really special as we were accompanied with my Son, my in-laws and mom. The journey to the top of Nandi hills is so good that it's just hard to describe apart from the view the most precious thing was my son's smile seeing monkeys. They were so cute and adorable. Once we reached temple it's carvings were really nice... And we started seeking almighty blessings. Last but not least the vendors selling animal shaped balloons the simple food stall with snacks and beverages helped in refuelling us.

The Divine Winds

I went there as a part of my recent travel to Bangalore and reached the temple on an evening to see the sunset. But something felt was more divine and peaceful. The people come there leaves their rushy burden outside the temple and stays in serenity. An unusual view from the rushy Bangalore.

This temple should be on top of the list if any traveller who wants to explore bangalore. This temple dates back to more than 500 years, which means it was built at the time when bangalore was founded. The deity is a gigantic bull. Basavanagudi, one of the oldest areas in the city, means bull temple in kannada. Thus, the whole area is named after the temple. Just 50 metres away is the dodda ganesha temple, another ancient and important temple. Travellers can also visit the nearby ramakrishna ashrama and other attractions. Bull Temple on Bull Temple Road

One of the most important tourist spots of Bangalore. Very close to Dodda Ganapathi Temple and surrounded by other temples and parks. Relax in the Bugle Rock park and spend the evening on the hillock. You can shop in the adjacent Gandhi Bazaar as well. It is located on the Bull Temple Road, the road named after the famous temple. There is no entrance fee for this attraction.
