Changu Lake Overview

Ranked 3 of 58 sightseeing in Gangtok

Melting snow from the mountains in the surrounding area brings in a perennial source of water to form the Changu Lake in Gangtok. Also known as Tsomgo Lake, it has one of the most amazing sceneries surrounding it in the country. Both Hindus and Buddhists revere the lake as a sacred one.

Located at 12,400 ft. in Gangtok on the Nathula Highway, the oval-shaped lake is the source of the Lungtse Chu River. During winter, the lake remains completely frozen glistening in the sunlight while in spring it is adorned with an array of colours as wildflowers bloom all around it. Truly a breath-taking sight to behold! To add to this beauty are the waterfalls dotting the way like private showers for the celestial beings.

There is a legend that, in early times, Buddhist saints, or Lamas as they were called, would look at the colour of the lake to foretell the future. Sikkim’s faith healers known as Jhakris visit the lake to offer prayers on full moon nights. The lake also has several species of birds that are migrating stopping here. Yak rides are a tourist’s delight while they shop for yak cheese at the local village market. Popular snacks in the area are momos and tea.

Essentials like gum boots and snow boots are available for hire but it is necessary to carry warm clothing.

Beautiful but crowded

Changu lake falls on the way to the most visited destination in Sikkim - Nathula - and so it's always quite crowded. The lake and it's surroundings are beautiful and scenic, especially so when clouds are floating around and crowds are less. The noisy crowd and vendors around this place ruin the whole experience though. There are many shops selling many things (drinks, food, booze, etc) and also lot of locals offering yak rides. The place is not very maintained - it's quite dirty and smells bad in many places (mainly due to the yaks). There's also a ropeway that takes you to the top of the adjoining mountain but it's of no use if the weather is not good. If you want to enjoy a little bit of peace and simply appreciate the beauty of the place, go towards the middle or other end of the lake (towards Nathula, along the road). Overall, only worth a short stop on the way to Nathula.

Scenic beauty

Tsomgo and Changu are one and the same. We went there in December so we didn't find a frozen lake but still the view was amazing. This is a sacred lake and yes you are not allowed to go into the lake. You can take a Yak ride as there are many available.

Nature's Wonder!

This is one of the most beautiful lakes in the country. Located at any amazing 14000 feet above sea level, this lake is frozen for most part of the winter and the hills around it are snow covered. I visited in the month of July when there was no snow cover but the lake was surrounded by lush green hills. The lake is easily accessible from Gangtok by Jeep and is usually clubbed with the visit to Nathu La Pass and Baba Harbhajan Singh temple. A must visit while in Sikkim.

One time Visit.

I have been there while visiting Nathula Pass. It was not attractive in first look but due to peaceful surroindongs, you like to spend some time. It is very important lake for the locals and carry spiritual property ?. Local people used to drink water for good health and worship this lake.

Lake at 12000 ft altitude

Changu lake also called as tsogmo lake. It's one of the prime attractions in Sikkim. From Gangtok the share services are available for going to this place. Rate depends on your bargain capabilities. Sumos are used as the place is a top. If you are not good with mountains travels then you should not go. The route is epic full of thrill and adventure with risks. As the lake comes under military restrictions so a special permission is required for going there, don't need to worry agents are there to help. A beautiful lake with snow mountains surrounding all side. When we went there was snow so snow shoes to be used and yak rides also available.

Dont miss it

Very good place - It's beauty is like Kashmir in Sikkim.Do hire boots check it twice if its torn, or better buy one pair.Do the Yak riding, I will prefer on foot enjoying the beauty and roaming around.Biggest drawback - I don't understand why sikkim govt. Is trying to make man made buildings and structures around lake. Its like bad dirty patch in premises.

One of the most beautiful location

Changu Lake is one of the most beautiful location that I have ever visited to. You will surely bump into jawans as Changu Lake is located a few kilometres away from the Nathula Border. The best time to visit this place is April-June.

A memory that will always stay

This is a place I did never forget. My wife and I were staying at Rhenock House, Gangtok. On the third day of our stay we had planned a trip to Tsongo or Change Lake. When I heard it was a lake, I wasn't too excited. But a few minutes into the drive and I knew it was a place to visit again. As you drive uphill, the weather changes instantly, and you are literally up in the clouds. At Changu Lake there was ice. The one thing I will never forget is a Yak ride, it's a bit expensive thankfully we had the cash to pay. If you don't have cash ready there's no way you did be same to take that ride. The terrain doesn't permit ATMs. There's paperwork involved before you can visit this beautiful place, but it's absolutely worth it. A must try. Just ask a local guide and they will be able to help you with logistics.
