Ranked 1 of 2 sightseeing in Chatham Island

The saw mill located here is a very old mill with a long history behind it, as it was destroyed in the year 1942 due to heavy Japanese bombs. It is because of the heavy bombings that took here all the heavy machineries were destroyed and as a result the mill had to be closed down.

Later on, after the year 1945, the Japanese occupied the islands and the mill was revived again. The work in the mill got started in the year 1946. The working of the mill is attributed to different sections that work in coordination, as the segregation of the logs is the responsibility of the log depot. The conversion of round logs into different sizes is the responsibility of the mill section.

Preservative and seasoning of the wood is the responsibility of the Timber processing unit. The other units present in the mill are Construction unit, Mechanical Unit, Saw Doctoring Unit, Electrical Unit Dispensary, Canteen and Security etc., guides are hired by the travellers for a brief tour of the mill.

Oldest and largest Saw Mill in Asia

Chatam Saw Mill is the oldest and largest Saw Mill in Asia, established in the British Era. One gets educated about the whole process of obtaining wooden planks. How the planks are transported, stored, watered, dried can be easily understood looking at the various boards mentioning the name of processes. The compound also has a museum where all kind of local woodwork is put on display.

Asia's oldest and largest Saw Mill

Extremely Humid and hot but everything's worth it :)1. See how the oldest saw mill is still running and chopping all those logs.2. See how the logs were transported initially using locomotives and their tracks are still there.3. When the Japanese bombed the place they created a BIG crater and over it is a bridge now.4. There are bunkers and you can visit them and see them from inside.5. The Wood Museum is just astonishing as you can witness the marvels the people created out of wood. The place is easily accessible via a road from Port Blair and water accessible too :)

Old saw mill: Not so great

Chatham Saw Mill is located at Chatham Island, connected to mainland by bridge. One can go there by bus which goes to Chatham, which has very good frequency. This is very old mill, but still operational. Not recommended to visit. If you have extra spare time and have kids, then only go for it.
