Chennakeshava Temple Overview

Ranked 2 of 4 sightseeing in Somnathpur

Chennakeshava temple or Keshava temple is the prime attraction of Somnathpur. Chennakeshava temple, built in 1268 by Soma, the commander-in-chief of Hoysala king, Narasimha III, is regarded as a fine example of Hoysala temple architecture.

Chennakeshava temple, which has three shrines, is dedicated to the three forms of Lord Vishnu- Janardhana, Venugopala and Keshava, among which, the idol of Lord Keshava is missing.

All the three shrines of Chennakeshava temple are built on a star-shaped platform and have pointed star-shaped design and towers.  It is believed that the temple was constructed at the later Hoysala period as the temple exhibits both upper eaves and lower eaves.  The horizontal mouldings or friezes on the walls of the temple are decorated by the detailed sculpted procession of foliage, elephants, yetis, swans and horsemen. The friezes on the south side of the temple depict scenes from Ramayana, the rear side has the stories of Lord Krishna and the northern side has the tales of Mahabharata.

Nice architecture

Enjoy the architecture reminiscent of Belur and Halebid temples much closer to Bangalore in Somnathpura. It's quite close to Mysore too and can be covered in a day trip. Take a guide who will explain everything to you.

Beautiful architecture and a must visit place

It is the most unappreciated and hidden gem near Mysore. The temple and architecture is so beautiful that you can enjoy it for hours and not realise the time and it is free. The foreign tourists come but Indians are scarce. If you visit this place you will realise the depth of our cultural heritage and how even the smallest Kingdom had such marvel to offer. It is a must visit place and anyone visiting Mysore should not miss it for anything.

Very nice place

It's about 60 KM from Mysore, we visited on the way to BR hills from Mysore. Good place with very beautiful carving. Well maintained by Archeological Survey of India. Duration of visit is around 1 hour.

Wonderful architecture

We started from Bengaluru late in the noon and it was raining heavily and we reached this place around evening 4 pm. Being a Sunday we could see several tourists. This is the temple dedicated to Vishnu as Kesava, hence it is known as Kesava temple. Somnathpur was earlier under the rule of Cholas which was conquered by Hoysala Vishnuvardhana in the year ad 1117. Later on it was ruled by Vijayanagara kings and the Wodeyars of Mysore. The stone carved architecture both inside and outside is amazing and is an artists delight. There are guides available who will explain the details of the temple. This place can be covered within a day from Bengaluru along with a couple of other places.
