Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple Overview

Ranked 8 of 23 sightseeing in Alappuzha (Alleppey)

Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple, located in Mavelikkara is one of the most famous temples in Kerala. The deity of the Bhagavathy temple is believed to have healing powers. This temple houses a massive oil lamp which is made from granite. At a time, more than 1,000 wicks can be held in this lamp.

The months of February and March mark huge celebrations in this temple as the festival of Bharani takes place during these months. The entire temple with several activities and grand feasts come alive during this festival.

Celebrated in the month of Kumbham, this festival is celebrated with gaiety and pomp. Owing to the number of devotees thronging the destination during this festival, it is now been widely known as the Kumbha mela of South.

Kuthiyottam and Kettukazhcha are the two main highlights of this festival. Kuthiyottam is a dance, which is performed as an offering to the deity. It is a ritual dance that dates back several centuries, which is well practised and perfected. This dance can be seen in many houses of Chettikulangara and in neighbouring areas.

On the other hand, another highlight of the festival is ‘Kettukazhcha’. It involves showcasing of deftly sculpted and decorated forms of six temple cars known as ‘Kuthiras’ and five Therus along with the icons of Bhima and Hanuman.

A great darshan

We had a great dharsan, the tall statue of Hanuman and Kalinga Narthana Krishna are the great attractions on this temple. We purchased a lot in the outside of the temple like divine CDs and photos and a special thing in this temple is Vinayagar and Abishekam of Ragukethu which is done by every devotee in their own hands.
