Dakshineswar Temple Overview

Ranked 2 of 773 sightseeing in Kolkata

Dakshineswar Temple was constructed under the supervision of Rani Rasmani of Janbazar. A popular story says that in her dreams she was asked by Goddess Kali to build this temple. The temple sprawls over an area of 25 acres housing the main Kali temple and adjoining prayer halls and Shiva temples.

This is one of the oldest and the largest temples of the city that reflects the Navaratna style of architecture. One of the prime attractions of the temple, the Ganga River that flows by the temple is the place for all the visitors to take a holy dip. Standing opposite to the main temple are the 12 temples of Lord Shiva.

Dakshineswar received its prominence after Rama Krishna Paramahamsa achieved spiritual enlightenment here and started spreading the words of Goddess Kali. He lived in this temple for years and remained as the main priest here. His rooms are open to the public, which has now been turned into a place for meditation and prayer.

Several Hindu religious ceremonies take place in this temple premises even today. Every evening one can attend the prayers offered to the Goddess through the form of dance and religious songs. The Panchavati garden close to the temple is beautifully landscaped and well maintained by the temple committee.

Excellent. Best temple in Kolkata.

If you want to visit a Kali temple in Kolkata, this has to be the place. Located at banks of ganges, be there in the evening and enjoy a calm and peaceful atmosphere. No one pushes you for a puja or dakshina. You can also see room used by Sri Ramakrishna. Take a boat ride to other side of the river to belur math . Due to construction of a flyover and roads nearby, it might be bit inconvenient these days to visit the place.

Clean & well maintained

You are immersed in the spirituality this places exudes. Everyone is in total discipline, queues, shops etc. As compared to other Kali temples . Talking about the architecture, it is very distinct and has a very earthy feeling. The fact that it is on the banks of river Ganges also increases the devotional aspect. You feel very positive coming here . Apart from being a Kai temple, it has multiple Shivlings as well . A recommended place for all.

My Kali of Sri Ramakrishna paramahamsa

The Aarti in the evening is a must watch, the deity here, is from where the thakur ramakrishna ji had the mother give her holy vision and talk directly.Yogi paramahansa yogananda ji had frequent visits too, for whom too the mother blessed with vision and talk through this same main idol here. The temple is managed by the trust of Lokamatha Rani Roshmani. The ferry is a kilometers' long from the temple for a waters journey to belur math at a cheapest price in the shortest travel time wrt the local transports.

Awesome place

You have to deposit your Mobile, cameras and other stuff and will be subjected to security checks before entering. Sufficient place for car parking. Ignore the street vendors selling everything because price and quality could be an issue. The Temple is never very crowded and Darshan shouldn't be a problem. Visit the shiva temples and the place where Ramakrishna and Sharda my lived. Avoid crossing the ganges by the lousy bosts to Belur math located opposite the temple

Tapasthali of Thakur Ramkrishna Paramhans Dev

Situated on the northern outskirts of Kolkata, this large temple complex of the Goddess Kali is where Ramkrishnadev used to perform Puja and also was the place of his Sadhana. Apart from the main temple there is the 'Dwadash Shivalinga' and there is a beautiful adjoining Ghat on the majestic Ganga and the ghat also has a regular Ferry service.

Lovely place

Dakshineswar Kali Temple, which is situated on the bank of the Highly river was consecrated in the year 1855. It is built by Rani Rasmani. It is said that guided by a vision of the goddess Kali, she started the construction of the temple at Dakshineshwar, four miles north of Kolkata. The name of the idol of Kali worshiped in the temple is Bhavatarini means, 'She who liberates her devotees from the ocean of existence. 'The temple compound, apart from the nine-spire main temple, contains a large courtyard surrounding the temple, with rooms along the boundary walls. There are twelve shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva along the riverfront, a temple to Radha-Krishna, a bathing ghat on the river, a shrine dedicated to Rani Rashmoni. 'Nahavat-Khana', the chamber in the northwestern corner just beyond the last of the Shiva temples, is where Ramakrishna ( a Bengali Hindu sage) spent a considerable part of his life. It's very clean tampel, everything is very good. Jai maa kali ..

Beautiful temple with amazing colour combination

Me and my friend visited Kolkata this March, we decide to go Dakshineswar temple. First we took bus from Howrah station to Belur Math then we took ferry from Belur Math to Dakshineswar Temple, as we reached this place we felt really amazing. This place is so beautiful, you can capture this temple from outside camera not allowed inside. People come here from far away, and it is said that prayers are answered here, this temple is closed 1 pm to 3 pm, so you have to come here either early or after 3 pm to inside temple.
