The city of Bardhaman is located on the banks of River Damodar. This river originates from Sonajuria Falls of Bijonsa Hill located in the Palampur District of Bihar.

The river joins Barakar at Disergarh and then flows through the Bardhaman District. It continues to flow through Hooghly District and Howrah District before joining Bhagirathi (Ganges in Murshidabad).

There is a bridge over Damodar at Sadarghat which is known as Krishok Setu. The sandbanks by the river are ideal for picnics, whereas, boat rowing can be enjoyed on the waters of the river. A kite flying fair takes place on the banks during Poila Magh or the first day of the Bengali month of Magh.
