Shiva Temple under Archaeological Department of India

This is a Shiva Temple some 4 km West of Kumbakonam in Darasuram. This is maintained by archaeological department of India. The temple is well-maintained and has even a park around it. The timings of this temple is from 6-12noon and in the evening 4-9. So the between hours can be spent in the park or with the unique beautiful historical sculptures inside the temple. This is one of the must see places of Kumbakonam. We do have a parking facitility inside with some charges.

Rich heritage place

Though this place is a low profile place compared to any other tourist destination in Tamil Nadu, a lot tourists show enthusiasm to visit this heritage place. We have fulfilled our dream of visiting this place in our lifetime.

Unique architecture

Architectural marvel dating back to the Chola Dynasty and one of the places declared as Heritage Site by UNESCO. One can continue to marvel at the intricate carvings and huge mantaps and court yard for hours and still thirst for more. It is really astonishing that such a monument has been built those days using human beings and elephants to transport rocks. It is doubtful if something like this can be replicated.

Darasuram Temple - Divine Kshetram

What to say! Both Uppiliappan and Darasuram Temple take you to another world and makes you relive the bygone era. Worshiping the deity at Uppiliappan Temple is equal to seeing him at Tirupathi. The sight of Lord in reclining posture along with his consorts Bhudevi and Sridevi needs to be experienced. We had a wonderful darshan and the priests take pain to explain the history of the temple. We were lucky to partake of the prasadam - curd rice without salt. But each and every bit of it is divine. Will certainly like to revisit the place. Darasuram which is UNESCO heritage site is an architectural marvel. One can spend hours at this temple and still your hunger will not be vetted. The pains taken to preserve and maintain such a treasure is laudable.

Huge temple in Kumbakonam!

I would suggest to go in the early morning, its peaceful and can feel the sunrise and nature! This was built by Cholas in 10-12th century. The Airavateswara temple at Darasuram is a classic example of Chola art and architecture.

The sculpture carvings are 1000yrs old

Darasuram temple is about 10 km from Kumbakonam. It is a world heritage center managed temple. You must see it to believe that such beautiful sculpture was carved over 1000 years ago. I would recommend for anyone to hire a guide to show them the beauty of the stone carvings - one can forget the time element.

One of the best architecture

One of the best example of Chola architecture. Spread over a vast area and declared a UNESCO heritage site. You need several eyes to see and enjoy this marvel. Sadly the place looks deserted and people do not seem to bother. This is reflected in the performance of daily rituals to the lord with the priest requesting for donation either in cash or kind to take care of daily needs. This situation needs to change.

One of the Best Architectures

I would say that it is one of the best architectures you can ever find in south india. The sculptures are awesome. You would stare at them for hours. Every sculpture in the temple walls, pillars are etched in such a divine way. The sculptures will tell you the a lot of stories from mythology. If you are visiting Kumbakonam, please don't miss this temple.

Chola architecture at its best

No matter whether one believes in God or not, it is worth visiting temples built by Chola emperors. Everyone must have heard about Thanjavur great temple, but this one sits quietly within Kumbakonam outskirts but boasts majestic and speaks volumes about Chola architecture. Its a treat to watch those finely carved sculptures. For a moment one can imagine living in Chola time by being in this temple.

The poetry in stone

Darasuram temple is part of the World Heritage Centre. One word description- 'Marvellous'. The stone architecture is enthralling. The minute carvings, the expressions, the beauty created in stone is unbelievably beautiful. You can miss any other temple but not Darasuram.
