Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Overview

Ranked 3 of 77 sightseeing in Darjeeling

A steam locomotive chugging on one of the world’s oldest and highest train route with magnanimous yet serene snow-capped mountains in the backdrop, snaking through numerous stations and tunnels, and offering breath-taking views of the gigantic Himalayas is the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a marquee railway line which stands out exclusively in a country that boasts of one of the world’s largest rail networks. It plies between New Jalpaiguri (station) and Darjeeling in West Bengal. Inaugurated in 1880 and running up to a height of over 7,000 feet make the Darjeeling Railway one of the oldest and highest railway lines in the world. The “Toy train” begins its journey from Siliguri of West Bengal and reaches Darjeeling after covering a distance of 78 km and crossing 13 stations on its way, including Ghum, the highest station in India.

The entire circuit is filled with scenic views and tantalising rail ‘loops’ where the train turns around 360°, offer a panoramic view of the hills, making it one of the best train trips in India. The train, at some points while climbing, runs so slowly that one could walk beside the train and overtake it.

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a distinct piece of architecture having universal appeal and it attracts interested tourists not only from India but around the world.

Nostalgic

Although the ride itself and the views it offers are nothing extraordinary, the whole experience is very nostalgic, especially with the steam train, reminding you of your childhood. The train feels like a toy train (and is named so) and chugs along slowly through the busy streets of Darjeeling up to Ghoom station. Except the war memorial at Batasia Loop, there's not much interesting to see on the way and you might get a little bored after a while (especially while coming back from Ghoom). Even the nostalgia wears off by the time you return back to Darjeeling after 2 hours :-). The tickets can be booked online from IRCTC website and it's better if you do that during peak season. The steam train ride is quite costly as compared to the diesel one, but is a decent value for money. The train bogies & seats are decently maintained (by Indian railway standards) but the stations and the whole experience could be managed little better.

"Darjeeling" - A paradise on earth

Darjeeling a northeastern Indian town is laden with nature's bounty aesthetic values with an augmentation of Indian Himalayan railways makes it paradise on earth. The Himalayan railways were established in 1879 and still this heritage is an exemplary human intelligence and beauty through the gigantic Himalayan ranges and waterfalls.Beautiful climate and fascinating tea garden are so soothing for a persona. Rock climbing, paragliding, driving through udankhatola (virtual flying machine) are expeditions in the town. Mountaineering School, Museum, and the Zoo (which has peculiar animals) adds icing to the cake.It is a must visit hill station which happens to be a resort in English regimes.Come and Enjoy nature's bounty.

Fun ride

This is a good fun not to be missed if you have time. The booking of this have to done well in advance since the seats are limited as the steam train has only 2 coaches.Even though this rolls through some dirty localities, it is all in the game and it is really a enjoyable ride.Enroute you stop by at the batasia loop whee you enjoy the gardens and later on at the rail museum to seem some history of the marvel of this rail engineering.

The Glamour Ride

Riding the Toy Train of Darjeeling Himalayan Railways has always remained a coveted experience to me. After all this Toy Train has been accorded the UNESCO World Heritage status. Operating on narrow gauge tracks since 1880s and providing an important transport link to various parts of Darjeeling hills and lower plains, the Toy Train is still unmatched when it comes to absorbing magnificent beauty of the mountains. I always feel thrilled with the small steam engine pulling mini coaches up the steep mountains through breathtaking landscapes and overcoming almost impossible curves and gradients using sheer engineering ingenuity and creative skills.

The Joy-Ride

It's a lifetime experience indeed to ride the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, nicknamed Toy-Train. We took our journey from Kurseong to reach Darjeeling as the service from NJP is bit irregular now a days. Three hours of journey is full of lot of discoveries as the train takes turns & twists in every minutes. Major stations are Sonada & Ghum. Three types / categories of compartments are available.
