David Scott Trail Overview

Ranked 25 of 43 sightseeing in Shillong
David Scott Trail is one of the most popular trekking routes in Meghalaya.
Originally this trekking trail was a bridle path established by David Scott, a British officer, in the early 1800s, and was used by people to travel from Assam to Bangladesh. Though the entire route extends for over a 100 km and takes about five days to trek, the best known existing portion of this horse track is located between the villages of Mawphlang and Lad Mawphlang. The trek takes you across the beautiful terrain of East Khasi Hills and covers around 16 km. During this four hour walk you will cross streams, dodge waterfalls, trudge through meadows, pass through sacred groves, valleys and Khasi villages. One can also set up camps on the way and enjoy the captivating beauty of the green rocky cliffs in the Umiam valley.
Meghalaya, being the caving capital, one can also try their hands at exploring some of the deepest and longest caves.
This trek is best enjoyed when travelling in a group. The best time to trek on this trail is in the months of October and November, right after the monsoons and when the climate is favourable.

Amazing trekking route with incredible views

David Scot Trail originates at Mawphlang, a 45 min drive from Shillong and ends at Lad Mawphlang, which is on the highway connecting Shillong to Sohra (Cherrapunjee). Takes anywhere between 3 to 4 hours to complete the trek. Moderately difficult trek that first descends down the valley floor towards the river basin and emerges upwards from the basin across dense foliage of variety of trees and rock formations interspersed with pools of water and falls. It can be done without a guide if you have a map. But it is advised to use guide services to make the trek risk free.Be sure to be immersed in the nature and the beauty it offers, there are amazing rock formations across the trek and you are sure to wonder and thrilled about them. The pools of water can be very relaxing and soothing, carry additional clothes if you plan to unwind in the pools! Carry enough water and food to stay active, the trek can take about 4 hours and you have nothing in the way for refreshments. Also, use good trekking boots and carry a knife for any emergency. Also carrying a torch helps if it gets dark.

A choice for the trekkers and nature lovers

David Scott Trail is a lovely day trek in the woods with stream along side. The 5 - 6 hours trek will be a lifetime experience. Crossing the 2 water streams was a superb experience. One must take a guide along. One must carry water and energetic food like chocolates, dry fruit etc. The trail is with superb view all around and a perfect place for nature lovers.

A lovely trek

A lovely trek but not for the uninitiated. If going with kids, think twice as there is no food or water or any other amenities in the whole 14 km stretch. Crossing water bodies in between is also not an easy task, actually very tricky as its very slippery at some places. It gets a bit rough towards the end of the trail so be prepared with food, water and( god forbid )some basic first aid.
