Daya River Overview

Ranked 17 of 52 sightseeing in Puri
Daya River in Puri, a branch of Kuakhai River, starts at Saradeipur. It joins with Malaguni River and flows into Chilika Lake on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. This 37 km long river is historically important as the infamous Kalinga war was fought on the river bank. It was also the cradle of an early civilization.
On the banks of Daya River is located the Dhauli Hill where the Kalinga war was fought in the 3rd century BC. It is after this war that King Ashoka gave up all wars and became the disciple of Lord Buddha. There is a Shanti Stupa on the hill on which there are many stone panels. One of them depicts Lord Buddha in a reclining position and the other shows King Ashoka offering his sword to Lord Buddha.
Saddharma Monastery on Dhauli Hill and some rock cut caves are nearby attractions. The Chilika Lake where the river ends is a brackish water lake famous for varieties of marine life and also as a bird sanctuary. Historians, ornithologists and experience seekers would enjoy a visit to this place.
October to February is the best time to visit the destination. Local transportation is available from Bhubaneswar to Daya River and Dhauli Hill.

Kalinga War battle field

This is the place where The Great Ashoka took the oath to go for non-violence and preach the Lord Buddha. The River named "Rakth Pipas Nadi" as the Blood River, has a real story for the real massacre on Ashoka and Kalinga war.

Sacred river of Orissa

Daya river is not a sacred river of Orissa, but it is also a historical river of India. Beside this river the famous battle of King Ashoka and Kalinga was fought. The war pagoda was built which was later called shanti stupa

River from the top.

One needs to see this river from the top of Peace Monument only. Then it is beautiful. You have to remember your history book about King Ashoka and why he became a Buddhist.
