This is off beat Goa

Dr salim ali bird sanctuary is 1 km away from Panjim city. There are regular buses from Panjim stand. Ferry boat service is also free from Panjim to Charai island. Then you have to hire boat from forest officers. They charge Rs 750/- for 10 tourist. Many water birds are seen. Satish boat driver gives information. Many foreigners visit this place. Only important thing is there is no rest room for tourist. Which is very shameful to our country.

Go early to view the birds

You should reach the sanctuary at least by 7 am. Early morning is the best time to spot birds. You can take a boat ride in the Mandovi river and spot birds. This facility is provided by the Sanctuary. In Dec- Jan, migratory birds can be spotted. Sanctuary is situated in Chorao village. You can reach there by ferry from old Goa. It takes just 10 mins and you have to pay only rs.10 for the car.

Be early to catch the birds

Be sure you reach the sanctuary early enough to catch the birds, lest they fly away. However, access is not very easy unless you take a cab and then the boat. Walking in the sanctuary will give you a better experience than taking the boat ride.

best visited in the months of November to February

Located in the western end of the Chorao Island, this 2 sq km sanctuary is best visited in the months of November to February. Though there are official tours available, you can just hop onto a willing fishing boat and explore on your own. You will rewarded with herons, waterfowls, crabs and mud-skippers.
