Elephant Camp Overview

Ranked 2 of 14 sightseeing in Guruvayur

Tourists can visit the Elephant Camp or sanctuary that is located in Punnathur Kotta, at a distance of 3 km from the Guruvayur Temple. This Elephant Camp is one of its kinds in the world and is considered to be one of the largest elephant sanctuaries. The 10-acre camp was once the property of the Kings of Punnathur and houses some 60 elephants. In 1975, the present property was purchased by the temple authorities and the elephants were moved to the location from Sreevalsam, in a much-publicized procession. The fascinating feature is that all the elephants are offerings that are made by the devotees, at the temple.

The camp also acts as a training school for the elephants. Most of the elephants are trained to participate in major processions and daily temple rituals. The elephants are also trained to carry the idols of Guruvayur in the ‘Shiveli’ procession. For this purpose, the elephants need to participate in an Elephant Race or ‘Anayottam’ in the temple and the winner gets to carry the idol, during the festival. This camp is visited by several people every year, to see the training of the elephants and also, to gain knowledge of being an Elephant rider or ‘Mahavata’. Traditional methods are used to treat the common health problems of the elephants.

Rare experience

It opens about 9. 30 am. Entrance fee of 10 rs. This is where all the 51 elephants which are used in the temple rituals are taken care of .. It's green and you see elephants everywhere .!! Their mahouts or caretakers giving them their scrub, Bath, feeding, walking ,.. Really it's an wonder how tiny human beingsAre able to manage these huge animals .!! Photography is strictly forbidden ... It's little scary too as we cannot predict animals that too so huge and so many .. But was worth a visit.

Elephant Sanctuary at Guruvayur temple, how small we feel among these giants

One of the wonderful experiences that we had at the Elephant Camp near Guruvayur temple. Visited this around 8 in the morning. Staff were courteous, rules explained clearly. Mobiles were not barred but must be in silent mode. No photography allowed. You can see, elephants at their own home, no barriers, no chaining (only few of them have chains), freely moving around doing their regular duties - bathing, carrying heavy logs around, simply relaxing. Only folks scared are - we humans. Don't miss this and respect Elephants and their home.

Excellent Elephant Camp

Awesome elephants, dancing eating and drinking water. Getting themselves bathed by the mahouts is a pleasure to the eyes. Kids enjoyed the camp, it was nice to stay in God's own land. Kids wanted to touch the elephants but couldn't as it was prohibited.

An Elephant sanctuary with a heritage near the temple

With a legacy of about 400 years, the palace (Punnathur Kotta) built by the rulers (Punnathur Kings) became a temple property and the yard surrounding the palace was converted to an Elephant Shelter. The palace built in a traditional Nalukettu style was converted into a mahout training center. Gradually people started calling it the Anakotta (Elephant Fort). We can see about 80 tamed Elephants here all belonging to the Guruvayoor temple authorities which are donated by devotees. Majority of the devotees who come to Guruvayoor Temple make it a point to visit Anakotta too where you can see Baby Elephants, aged ones, few chained Elephants which are dangerous due to the biological changes which happens naturally and apart from these we can see them being washed, fed with palm leaves, some playing in the mud etc. Anakkotta may be the one and only of this kind in India where Elephants are taken care of perfectly. This place has been the location for several movies too.

A Place for Elephant Lovers

There are many elephants on display, but all tied up; some of them have interesting stories about themselves.
