Elephant Falls Overview

Ranked 1 of 43 sightseeing in Shillong

Elephant Falls is among most popular tourist sites of the city in East Khasi Hills District. The waterfall is located in Upper Shillong area within the Eastern Air Command of Indian Airforce. Situated at a distance of 12 km from the capital city of Meghalaya and at a distance of 8 km from Rhino Point, the site can be advanced through public transport.

The serene fall is a collection of three smaller falls that combine together to form the stream that falls over fern-covered rocks. The Khasi tribe named it Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew, meaning Three Steps Water Falls. Other waterfalls in the region include the Wir Phang Falls and the Wei Laplam Falls.

Britishers named it Elephant Falls during their regime after a rock by the side of fall that resembled elephant. The rock was destroyed later due to earthquake. Besides, there is a footpath from bottom to fall leading to a small lake.

Three tiered falls

Meghalaya is a land of waterfalls. This falls is three tiered in structure with steps which are natural to reach. It remains gushing with water throughout the year. Located close to Shillong Peak, tourists can make a compact sightseeing of both. This is gigantic and you can also reach the crystal waters by poised steps through the natural stairs.

Good Place to visit

These falls are worth visiting. The falls are in a stepwise fashion. An amazing and enchanting view at the end of the last fall. The shops outside also have good local materials for shopping and good local food is also available outside.

Shillong

Of all the beautiful places and breathtaking falls in Meghalaya state you have to mentioned elephant falls, it's the smallest in the state and locals don't even go there. Go to Nongkhnum river island most beautiful and incredible spots you'll ever find. Gorgeous falls, sandy beaches, mangroves, rocky hills and grassy meadows and bridges crossing the rivers and a worthy trek towards the falls and the water is so Chrystal clear you can see below and there are boat rides to the other falls.

Beautiful place

Nice place to visit for an hour or two.. Nothing much to see just a water fall is there which is very common in Shillong. All the places in Shillong, visit during day time late only as evening is risky.

Giant cascade

Elephant Falls are gigantic cascade which resembled like heads of elephants when they were first discovered by British explorers. It is worth visiting and climbing down to the falls. This place is best enjoyed during the monsoons.

Good for relaxing

12 kms on the outskirts of the city the mountain stream descends through two successive falls set in dells of uncovered rocks. At a short distance beyond the falls, there are two smaller falls which are none the less beautiful and captivating. These are the Wei Iaplam Falls and the Wir Phang Falls. A well paved footpath and a small wooden bridge facilitate access to these falls.

A great waterfall in Shillong

One of the picturesque waterfalls in Meghalaya .. Located about thirty minutes drive from the heart of Shillong city situated on Shillong - Cherapunjee road .. There are three falls in this area. You need to climb down about 180 hilly stony stairs to reach the last of the three falls ... There is an entrance fee and parking fee. There are small shops for souvenirs and tea, coffee and snacks. There is children park. There is also provisions for dressing up in traditional Khasi dress.
