Forest Research Institute Overview

Ranked 3 of 35 sightseeing in Dehradun

Forest Research Institute (FRI) is located in the north-west centre of the city, on the Kaulagarh Road. Sprawling over an area of around 2000 acres, this research institute was established in 1906.

The main attraction of this institute is the building itself, which has been constructed in Greco-Roman colonial style. This building houses six museums related to forestry, which include museums on social forestry, pathology, silviculture, timber, non-wood forest products and entomology.

In addition, the place also houses a Botanical Garden, which is a popular picnic spot among travellers. Besides, inside the estate, there is Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy that trains probationer officers of the Indian Forest Service.

Excellent architecture

Forest Research institute, located in Dehradun is one of the top sightseeing places in Dehradun. The main attraction is its main building in the campus. The architecture of this building is just awesome. It's an excellent piece of British architecture. A good place to walk around with family and couple. We are not allowed to sit in the lawn over there. But we can enter inside the campus to see the different 3 museums. It's a craziest shooting location of bollywood college movies. 'Student of the Year' is one of them. Also one can enjoy the greenery inside the campus.

Visit only if you are interested in botany, zoolongy etc

First the good points: the majestic building of the forest research institute of british architecture with lush green surroundings is a place to click pictures. The scene as one can see in pics ... Looks like an university or college from abroad. No wonder the place featured in a bollywood movie. Now the second part which is the museum inside. That is only for those who have ample knowledge of forestry, zoology, botany etc. I hope they can appreciate the specimens as for us laymans those things dint mean much. FRI can make the specimens interesting by making the displays little interactive or easy to understand.

Excellent place to visit in Dehradun

It is more commonly known as FRI by the locals and you can get buses from all over town to there i. e easily accessible. One should not miss an opportunity to go there as you will be amazed to see such greenery, cleanliness and a quiet atmosphere. You can visit the museums and have a look at the variety of flora and there are some really old fossilised tree samples and anyone would be amazed to see it. Take atleast 3-4 hours and do as much photography as you can. This place with its AWESOME British architecture will swoop you off your feet and will surely stay in your memory forever.Do give it a chance if you are in Dehradun.
