A Historical Fort

St.Angelos Fort, One of the best well preserved Fort, with rich influence of history but little known by people. Facing the Arabian Sea on 2 sides, it is strategically placed at a distance of 2 km from main town centre. It is an important historical monument and a good tourist centre. There are policemen who are good guides to the tourists. Inspector Gokulan of the tourism police is a highly knowledgeable gentleman. He has an amazing and detailed info about this fort and Its history. The gardens inside the fort are very well maintained. There is a tunnel which is believed to connect Kannur to Thalassery which is 35 kms away. There are also two different types of breakdown cells used to mentally torture hardened criminals. One which has no light & the other which doesnt allow you to stand. There is also a Dutch tombstone, synagogue ruin & a kerosene lighthouse ruin. Do not miss this place which is so full of history.

An interesting fort

This fort is a must see place for people visiting Kannur. This fort was built in 1505 by Portuguese and was later captured by Dutch in 1663 and sold it to Ali Raja of Arrackal in 1772. In 1790 it was taken over by the British who made it their important military station in Malabar area of Kerala. This fort remained with British till 1947.This fort is maintained by ASI and is in a fairly good condition. As you enter the fort a staff member of the fort explains the history of the fort (in Malayalam). The gardens are well kept and you can see few cannons at the entrance as well as inside the fort. Some of the cannons are facing the sea along the fort wall from where the view of the sea is very beautiful. There is also a lighthouse in the fort premises from where one can see the Mappila Bay which is a fishing harbor. The entry to the fort is free and the fort is open from 8 am to pm.The right time to visit the fort would be early in the morning or evening.
