Gandhamadana Parvatha

Gandhamadana Parvatha Overview

Ranked 6 of 10 sightseeing in Ramanathapuram

Gandhamadana Parvatha is situated on the island of Rameswaram, at 2.5 km north-east of the Ramanathaswamy Temple. This is a hillock as well as the highest point on the island of Rameswaram. This place comprises a two-storey ‘mandapa’, where the marbled footprints of Lord Rama have been enshrined. 8 km from this place, on the way to Dhanushkodi, lies the temple of Sri Kodandarama, which is famous as the place where Vibhishana was crowned as the king of Lanka, by Lord Rama, after winning the battle against Ravana. At the top of this mandapa, some very picturesque views on the island of Rameswaram, like windmills, sandbanks, backwaters, coconut trees and the vast ocean, can be seen.

The route to Gandhamadana Parvatha also comprises several other significant attractions of Ramanathapuram, like the Sugreevar Temple and Theertham. There is also the Bhadrakali Amman Temple on the way to this hillock, which is dedicated to Devi Durga. The Dhanushkodi and the Kurusadai Island are also situated nearby.
