Gangaikonda Cholapuram, Tamil Nadu

Gangaikonda Cholapuram is at a distance of around 80kms from Thanjavur and 40 kms from Kumbakonam. The Brihadeshwara temple here is a replica of the Big temple of Thanjavur but smaller in size. There is a big Nandi Bull statue in the entrance of the temple which looks feisty. The temple is surrounded by a lawn of grasses and plants. The place is usually crowded.

Temple is not well known for everyone except locals and travellers. This one is also Brihadeeshwara temple unlike the one in Thanjavur. The temple was built by Rajendra Cholan and was built after the Thanjavur temple. It is less crowded and well maintained while Thanjavur temple is over crowded and premises spoiled by visitors. This temple is open till 1 in the afternoon and 4 to 8pm in the evening. It is on and one should never miss this temple while passing through that way.

2nd big temple

Gangaikonda Cholapuram was built during medieval India and was erected as the capital of the Cholas by Rajendra Chola I, the son and successor of Rajaraja Chola, the great Chola who conquered a large area in South India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Sumatra, Kadaram (Kedah in Malaysia), Cambodia and others at the beginning of the 11th century A. The. It occupies an important place in the history of India. As the capital of the Cholas from about 1025 A. For about 250 years, the city controlled the affairs of entire southern India, from the Tungabhadra in the north to Ceylon in the south and other south east Asian countries. As of 2014, the ancient city exists as a small forlorn village in the Ariyalur district of Tamil Nadu, India. The great temple of Siva at this place is next only to the Brihadisvara temple at Thanjavur in its monumental nature and surpasses it in sculptural quality. The Gangaikondaan temple is an architectural and engineering marvel.

Another Brihadeshwara Temple

Closer to Kumbakonam, this is a beautiful spot to spend some time to admire the architectural beauty. Not at all crowded hence a great opportunity to take some good photographs. The monument is taken care by the Archaeological Survey of India. A graceful upward curving movement(Vimana), in contrast to the straight at Thanjavur.

Avoid the visit during noon

Good structures, not that fun. Go during the open hours of temple. We made a mistake of visiting at noon. Must carry shades, caps and definitely a bottle of water. Guides were illogical and I saw couple of foreigners being fooled.

Big and good

Around 990 year old temple and constructed by Rajendra Cholan son of Great Raja Raja Cholan. In this temple, linga is larger than Tanjore big temple and managed by India archaeology department. Distance from Tanjore to temple about 72 km took 1hrs 15 min via car.

Historic and well-maintained

It is a Archeology dept. maintained site. Well-maintained and you will be fascinated to see the structure and its historical importance. A must visit if you are travelling by this area or any where 40 km nearby.Opposite to its entrance is a small Govt. museum which gives quite a bit of information and details.
