Gangotri Temple Overview

Ranked 1 of 6 sightseeing in Gangotri

The temple town of Gangotri is located just 97 km from Uttarkashi.  Gangotri is believed to be the site where Ganges descended to Earth on the matted locks of Lord Shiva. The place also houses the temple of Vishwanath and Kuteti Devi.

The marble built 20 feet high temple of Gangotri is around 300 years old. This temple devoted to Goddess Ganga was built in the 18th century by a Gurkha commander Amar Singh Thapa.  In the 20th century, the Maharaja of Jaipur refurbished the shrine.

Around 2.50 lakh Hindu pilgrims visit Gangotri temple every year. The temple opens generally in the first week of May, on the day of ‘Akshay Tirth’ and shuts down on Diwali. Tourists generally visit the temple to watch the Arati ceremony.

Nelangana Resort, Harsil, Raja of Harsil, Rajma of Harsil, Cool Fresh Air, Food in Nelangana Resort,

I & my friend live in Ghaziabad (you. P. So we started early in the morning @ 4am it was long drive via Uttarkashi and many more small townships of Uttrakhand we reached our resort Nelangana in Harsil around 06:30pm, the Nelangana resort is spot on besides the Bhagirathi and you can hear the river flow in the night. We had sumptuous buffet dinner served at the resort and went to well deserved sleep. We woke up early to see the snow capped mountains from balcony of our window and a hot cup of tea served in our room. In afternoon we drove to Harsil town, it is a cantonement also nothing much to see there as the original cottage of Raja of Harsil had burned down and instead of that we were able to see a new cottage constructed by Forest Department. IF visiting Harsil town don't forget to bring home the Rajma famous for its aroma and taste ( Travelers as far as far from USA have taken the same back to their countries). Next day was Monday so we planned to go to Gangotri, so on Monday we had Sumptuous Breakfast and started for Gangotri it is almost 2 hours drive from Harsil, but is worth it, our resort owner had already arranged for a Gangotri Temple Pujari to receive us, we parked our car at ample parking space approximately 500 meters before Gangotri Temple. It is mandatory to take a dip is Bhagirathi before making obeisance at the temple, mind it the water is icy cold its temperature is below Degree centigrade as it is directly coming from Gaumukh Glacier which is a 15 km trek from Gangotri, so be prepared for stopping of your breath for 2 to 3 seconds once you take the dip, but miraculously all my weariness from the travel faded away the dip. So after the refreshing dip we went to pay obeisance to Goddess Ganga in it small & simple temple. After that we started back to our resort reached there by lunch time and had Khichdi cooked on our special request. In night we had a pleasure of having Famous Harsil Rajma for dinner and went to well deserved sleep. Next day we started early back to Ghaziabad with of course a Bag Full of Rajma and Canisters of Gangaji Water. Mid way we topped up our fuel tank at Uttarkashi which had almost one fourth fuel left in the Tank( Had started with full tank of 42 litre petrol from Ghaziabad (you. )). Advice for Travellers avoid travelling in Rainy Season as there are lot of landslides in Uttarkashi region and people get stuck for hours if a big one is there, Always have tank topped up in Uttarkashi as there is not Fuel Pump after that city, carry first aid medicines as you might experience head aches due to depletion of Oxygen level in the hills, people who are travelling for first time to hills if faced with blocked ear syndrome should gulp down their saliva.

Religious place

The Ganga is the most sacred river. Here it is known as Bhagirathi and comes from mountain glacier. At Devprayag, this merges with Alakananda and then known as Ganga. This temple is dedicated to Mother Ganga. Place is beautiful and trekking is required to reach temple.

Heavenly Abode.

We visited Gangotri in May 2013, about 22 days prior to the nature's devastation around mid June. We stayed at GMVN tourist house, situated in the lap of the divine Ganga. The place is serene, fresh, surrounded by natural beauty. The temple area has several bathing ghats. One feels mentally refreshed standing in front of the temple.
