Ghoom Monastery Overview

Ranked 17 of 77 sightseeing in Darjeeling

Ghoom Monastery is also known as Yogachoeling Gompa. It is located in a place called Ghoom in Darjeeling, hence the name Ghoom Gompa. It was in the year 1875 that a Mongolian astrologer cum monk established the Ghoom Gompa.

At the entry of the monastery, there is a huge giant size image of seated 'Maitreya Buddha' (prospective Buddha) inside. There are bells, ornate thanka scrolls and drums inside the monastery. Like many other monasteries in and around Darjeeling, this gompa is also a storehouse of some rare Buddhist manuscripts.

Located at a distance of about 8 km south from the main town of Darjeeling, this gompa has become a destination for people seeking peace and serenity. The gompa is located nearby Ghoom station. One can also reach the gompa from Hill Cart Road as it is situated just below the road.

Serene place

This monastery is located on the busy main Darjeeling highway/road and is crowded with tourists during the day, especially in late morning when people return from Tiger Hill. We went here very early morning when there was no other tourist around and the whole place felt very peaceful and calm. It was a serene experience. Inside the monastery building is a big golden statue of Buddha surrounded by very colorful painting, reliefs, statues, flags etc. Basic facilities like toilets and a snack shop are there in the compound.

Small and serene Monastery

Ghoom Monastery is a small and serene monastery at the foot of Darjeeling. Free from all the hustle and bustle of regular tourists. It's a must visit if you want to experience the happiness of meditation and catch glimpses of the life's of the buddhist monks living over there.

The oldest Monastery with biggest and oldest statues of Buddha

While coming back from Tiger Hill stop at Ghoom Monastery. It is an oldest Monastery in Darjeeling. It is build in 1850. It is very close to Ghoom Railway Station. One of the key attractions inside the Monastery is the 15-foot model of the Lord Buddha. This is one of the biggest and oldest statues of Buddha in Darjeeling area. This statue was created with clay that was all brought from Tibet. It is a small Monastery but worth visit.

A good monastery

At Ghoom which is 7 km from city centre Ghoom Monastery is on the side of main road. The monastry opens to public at 0600 hrs and the same time the big road business in front of the monastery in the public road starts. Darjeeling items can be purchased on lesser values. Large number of tourists are visiting this place.

A place where you find some peace of mind

A very popular and very known sightseeing. Be there at the time of prayer. You can also enjoy the Morning street bazar. I have visited at early Morning time. So the bazar was just opening and enjoyed roadside Darjeeling tea also.
